Western Cape
The Western Cape is a province of South Africa, situated on the south-western coast of the country. ''Protea repens'', known as the common sugarbush and in Afrikaans as the suikerbossie, is an erect shrub growing in the southern regions of South Africa. Related to other proteas, this plant is a relatively adaptable and variable species and can be found growing widely in various soils. Due to its showy flowers and adaptability, it is a popular garden subject for use in wildlife gardens in South Africa. Etymology The name of the plant family Proteaceae as well as the genus ''Protea'', both to which ''P. repens'' belongs to, derive from the name of the Greek god Proteus, a deity that was able to change between many forms. This is an appropriate image, seeing as both the family and the genus are known for their astonishing variety and diversity of flowers and leaves. The angulate tortoise (''Chersina angulata'') is a species of tortoise found in dry areas and coastal scrub vegetation in South Africa. This tortoise is the only known member of the genus ''Chersina''. Name and taxonomy This species is highly distinctive and is now classified by itself, in the monotypic ''Chersina'' genus. Promerops Cafer
The Cape sugarbird (''Promerops cafer'') is one of the eight bird species endemic to the Fynbos biome of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. Description The Cape sugarbird is a grey-brown bird that is easily recognisable by a spot of yellow under its tail and the very long tail feathers present in males. The male is 34–44 cm long, and the shorter-tailed, shorter-billed, and paler breasted female 25–29 cm long. Another characteristic of the Cape sugarbird is the sound it makes when it flies. The main flight feathers are arranged in such a way that when the bird beats its wings, a ''frrt-frrt'' sound is made with the intention of attracting females. ''Erica cerinthoides'' is a species of heath native to South Africa (the Cape Provinces, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Provinces), Lesotho and Eswatini. Common names include fire erica, fire heath, red hairy heath, rooihaartjie or klipheide. Throughout its range the species shows marked variation in habit, flower characteristics and hairiness. ''Protea scolymocephala'', also known as the thistle protea or thistle sugarbush, is a flowering plant from the genus ''Protea'' native to South Africa. Other recorded vernacular names for the plant are small green protea or scoly. In the Afrikaans language it is known by the name of ''kleingroenroos'', or alternatively ''witskollie''. ''Phaenocoma'' is a genus of South African plants in the tribe Gnaphalieae within the family Asteraceae. The name is derived from the Greek roots (to shine) and (hair), which refer to dry and shiny involucral bracts. Species There is only one known species, ''Phaenocoma prolifera'' (Cape strawflower). The Strawflower is native to cool, well-drained, sandy, mineral soils - often on slopes.
