Fernando De Araújo (East Timorese Politician)
Fernando de Araújo, also known as (26 February 1963 – 2 June 2015) was an East Timorese activist and politician. He was a clandestine activist for the independence of East Timor, and then founded the Democratic Party after independence. He was President of the National Parliament of East Timor from 2007 to 2012. He also served as the Acting President for two months in early 2008. Background and early career Araújo was born in Manutaci, Ainaro District, in what was then Portuguese Timor. He was of Mambai ethnicity. At the age of 12, he witnessed all 18 members of his family massacred by the Indonesian Army. He studied literature at Udayana University in Bali, Indonesia. Aniceto Guterres Lopes (born April 16, 1967 in Tapo, East Timor) is an East Timorese politician and human rights lawyer. Early life On December 7, 1975, Lopes and his family fled the country to Builalu, Indonesia to escape from the Indonesian troops that invaded East Timor. 1999 East Timorese Independence Referendum
An independence referendum was held in East Timor on 30 August 1999. The referendum's origins lay with the request made by the President of Indonesia, B. J. Habibie, to the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 27 January 1999, for the United Nations to hold a referendum, whereby the Indonesian province would be given choice of either greater autonomy within Indonesia or independence. Voters rejected the proposed special autonomy, leading to their separation from Indonesia. National Council Of Maubere Resistance
The National Council of Maubere Resistance (Portuguese: Conselho Nacional da Resistência Maubere, or CNRM) was an umbrella organisation of East Timorese individuals and organisations dedicated to resisting the Indonesian occupation of 1975–1999.
