Fencing At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Women's Foil
The women's foil was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1988 Summer Olympics programme. It was the thirteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from 21 to 22 September 1988. 45 fencers from 19 nations competed. Competition format The 1988 tournament used a three-phase format very similar to that of 1984. Unlike the men's foil and épée competitions (but like the men's sabre), the women's foil tournament kept the size of the second phase (double elimination) round at 16 fencers (compared to expanding to 32 for men's foil and épée). The first phase was a multi-round round-robin pool play format; each fencer in a pool faced each other fencer in that pool once. Olympic Fencing Gymnasium
SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium () is an indoor sporting arena located at the Olympic Park in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea. The arena was built from September 1984 to April 1986. History It was known as the Olympic Fencing Gymnasium () or Olympic Gymnasium No. 2 prior to 2011. The arena hosted the fencing and fencing part of the modern pentathlon events at the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 2011 it was remodelled for handball games at a cost of , specialized with handball only courts. It was renamed as such to host the SK Handball Korea League. Jujie Luan
Luan Jujie (; born 14 July 1958) is a Chinese-born Canadian fencer, born in Nanjing, China. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she became the first Chinese athlete to win the gold medal in fencing. Since moving to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1985, she has become a Canadian citizen. At the age of 50, Luan represented Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She has also participated in the 1988 and 2000 Summer Olympics. Career Being an outstanding athlete in her youth, she had already done well in track and badminton before switching to fencing. She started fencing at the age of 17 and in no time joined the national team in the same year. Fiona McIntosh (born 24 June 1960) is a Scottish writer and retired fencer. Biography McIntosh was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and educated at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.
