Fencing
Fencing is a group of three related combat sports. The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also ''saber''); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent. A fourth discipline, singlestick, appeared in the 1904 Olympics but was dropped after that and is not a part of modern fencing. Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics. Based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship, the modern sport arose at the end of the 19th century, with the Italian school having modified the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school later refining the Italian system. There are three forms of modern fencing, each of which uses a different kind of weapon and has different rules; thus the sport itself is divided into three competitive scenes: foil, épée, and sabre. Sergey Sharikov
Sergey Aleksandrovich Sharikov (russian: Сергей Александрович Шариков, 18 June 1974 – 6 June 2015), also known as Serguei/Sergei Charikov, was a left-handed Russian Olympic champion sabre fencer. In the Olympics he won two gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal. Early life Sharikov was born in Moscow, Russia, and was Jewish. Svetlana Anatolyevna Boyko (russian: Светлана Анатольевна Бойко; born 13 April 1972) is a Russian foil fencer. Career Boyko won the gold medal in the foil team event at the 2006 World Fencing Championships after beating Italy in the final. She accomplished this with her team mates Aida Chanaeva, Julia Khakimova, and Ianna Rouzavina. On 15 August 2008 Boiko, with teammates Aida Chanaeva, Victoria Nikichina and Evgenia Lamonova, beat the United States team 28 to 11, winning the gold medals of 2008 Olympic Games. This was her fourth consecutive olympic appearance, now as the captain of the national team. Boiko is known among teammates as ''Mama Sveta'' - for her experience; she actually has two daughters. Aida Mohamed
Aida Mohamed (born 12 March 1976) is a Hungarian foil fencer, silver medallist at the 1993 World Championships and team gold medallist at the 2007 European Championships. She is the only Hungarian athlete in history to have competed at seven different Olympic Games (from 1996 to 2020). Career Mohamed was born in Budapest from a Hungarian mother and a Syrian father. She was too shy in primary school to join the local fencing team, but her PE teacher persuaded her to give it a go. Valentina Vezzali
Maria Valentina Vezzali (; born 14 February 1974) is an Italian politician and retired fencer. As a fencer, Vezzali won six Olympic gold medals and was a 16-time World Champion in foil. She is one of only five athletes in the history of the Summer Olympic Games to have won five medals in the same individual event. In 2013, Vezzali became a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies as part of the Civic Choice party. In 2021, she became Italy's cabinet undersecretary in charge of sports.
