Female Bullfighters
This is a list of female bullfighters who are notably participating, or have in the past participated, in bullfighting. Women in bullfighting has been traced to the sport's earliest renditions in Spain, namely during the late-1700s and early-1800s. Spanish painter Francisco Goya first depicted a female bullfighter in his etching work ''La Pajuelera'', which featured a woman sparring with a bull on horseback in 1816. During the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, women were forced to exile in other Spanish-speaking countries and the United States in order to continue bullfighting. In Spain – along with many countries in Latin America and Asia – women were banned from the sport. They were banned from bullfighting in Spain until 1974, and in Japan until 2018. Bullfighting is a physical contest that involves a bullfighter attempting to subdue, immobilize, or kill a bull, usually according to a set of rules, guidelines, or cultural expectations. There are several variations, including some forms which involve dancing around or leaping over a cow or bull or attempting to grasp an object tied to the animal's horns. The best-known form of bullfighting is Spanish-style bullfighting, practiced in Spain, Portugal, Southern France, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Peru. Sónia Matias (bullfighter)
Sónia Patricia Pereira Matias (born 17 May 1983) is a Portuguese former football defender who played for Prainsa Zaragoza and RCD Espanyol of Spain's Primera División. She also played for SU 1º Dezembro in Portugal's Campeonato Nacional. With the Portugal national team she won 55 caps between 2005 and 2012, scoring four goals. She ended her playing career in summer 2014, after Espanyol decided not to renew her contract. Hilda Eliana Tenorio Patiño (born June 11, 1986) is a Mexican bullfighter and ''matador''. She was the first woman to receive her ''alternativa'' in the Plaza de Toros México, the largest bullring in the world, aged 24. Tenorio completed her ''alternativa'' on February 28, 2010. She has been an outspoken advocate of feminism in the sport. She is the third Mexican woman to attain the rank of ''matador''. Lupita López (born Blanca Guadalupe López Maldonado; October 13, 1978) is a Mexican bullfighter and ''matador''. Born in Mérida, Yucatán, Lopez has been reported as deciding to be a bullfighter when she was eleven years old. She became a ''matador'', aged 32, in 2011. She came from a family of bullfighters. Marie Sara (born Marie Bourseiller; June 27, 1964) is a French bullfighter. In 1991 she was Europe's only female rejoneador (rejoneadora). Jean-Luc Godard was her godfather. Patricia McCormick (November 18, 1929 – March 26, 2013) was an American bullfighter.
