Felsőtárkány National Forest Railway ( hu, Felsőtárkányi Állami Erdei Vasút) is a 5 kilometers long railway line in Northern Hungary. It operates regularly between 1 May and 30 September. It was built in 1915. Felsőtárkány
Felsőtárkány is a municipality in the Eger District of Heves county, Hungary. Geography The municipality lies in the Tárkány basin, at the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, on an area of 7734.6 hectares, 6 km northeast from Eger in Heves county. History Middle ages The history of Felsőtárkány goes back to the 13th century with the first descriptive mention in the form of Oltarkan and Feltarlam in a document from 1261. During the 14th-15th century the settlement was made up of two parts, Alsó- and Felsőtárkány (''Lower- and Upper-Tárkány'') Between 1330 and 1335, Carthusians monks settled in the monastery built in Felsőtárkány. During the Ottoman invasion the medieval Felsőtárkány was destroyed in 1526, and was never populated again. Alsótárkány was also destroyed in 1552, but it was repopulated in 1577. Eger
Eger ( , ; ; also known by other alternative names) is the county seat of Heves County, and the second largest city in Northern Hungary (after Miskolc). A city with county rights. Eger is best known for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings, the northernmost Ottoman minaret, dishes and red wines. Its population of around 53,000 makes it the 19th largest centre of population in Hungary according to the census. The town is located on the Eger Stream, on the hills of the Bükk Mountains. Names and etymology The origin of its name is still unknown. One suggestion is that the place was named after the alder ( in Hungarian) which grew so abundantly along the banks of the Eger Stream. This explanation seems to be correct because the name of the town reflects its ancient natural environment, and also one of its most typical plants, the alder, large areas of which could be found everywhere on the marshy banks of the Stream although they have since disappeared. Bükk
The Bükk Mountains () are a section of the North Hungarian Mountains of the Inner Western Carpathians. Much of the area is included in the Bükk National Park. Geography Although Kékes, the highest point in Hungary, is not here but in the nearby Mátra Mountains, the average height of the Bükk Mountains–with more than 20 peaks higher than 900 m–exceeds that of Mátra.
