Mary Fels
Mary Fels (, Fels; March 10, 1863 - May 16, 1953) was a German-born American philanthropist, Georgism, Georgist, Zionism, Zionist, Women's suffrage in the United States, suffragist, economics, economist, author, and journal editor. She was interested in all the different movements that supported democracy. She was an ardent supporter of equal suffrage, and was active in the promotion of Israel. Though she supported and encouraged her husband, Joseph Fels, in his campaign for economic justice, it was not until after his death that Mrs. Fels became active in the Georgism, single tax movement. She established and supervised the Joseph Fels International Commission, which included welfare funds. Fels-Naptha is an American brand of laundry soap manufactured by Summit Brands. The soap was originally created in 1893 by Fels and Company. It originally included the ingredient naphtha, effective for cleaning laundry and urushiol, an oil contained in poison ivy. Naphtha was later removed as a cancer risk. History The original Fels-Naptha was developed by Fels & Company of Philadelphia around 1893. Its predecessor Fels & Company, was established by Lazarus Fels and son Abraham in 1866 in Baltimore, Maryland, but unexpectedly failed after some period of success. The Fels family moved to Philadelphia, where another of Lazarus' sons, Joseph, started the new firm and incorporated in 1914. Joseph's younger brother Samuel Simeon Fels was the new company's first president and held that position until he died in 1950. Hohle Fels
The ''Hohle Fels'' () (also ''Hohlefels'', ''Hohler Fels'', German for "hollow rock") is a cave in the Swabian Jura of Germany that has yielded a number of important archaeological finds dating from the Upper Paleolithic. Artifacts found in the cave represent some of the earliest examples of prehistoric art and musical instruments ever discovered. The cave is just outside the town of Schelklingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg, near Ulm. Because of the outstanding archeological finds and their cultural significance, in 2017 the site became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura. Willi Fels
Willi Fels (17 April 1858 – 29 June 1946) was a New Zealand merchant, collector and philanthropist. Biography Fels was born in Halle an der Weser, Germany on 17 April 1858. Fels had a keen interest in history and classics, but rather than going to university he became manager of the family's woollen mill near Paderborn. Fels was visited by his uncle, Bendix Hallenstein, in 1881, and married Sara, one of Hallenstein's daughters in the same year. Willi and Sara had three daughters Helene, Emily and Kate; and one son Harold who was killed in World War I. Joseph Fels
Joseph Fels (16 December 1853–22 February 1914) was an American soap manufacturer, millionaire, Georgist and philanthropist. Biography Born of German Jewish immigrants in Halifax County, Virginia, Fels moved with his family to Baltimore in 1866; by 1876 he had assumed control of a soap manufacturing company based in Philadelphia, and brought two of his brothers in as partners shortly after. One of them, Samuel Simeon Fels, became president of the firm. In 1894 he developed the Fels-Naptha soap brand, historically used as a home remedy in the treatment of contact dermatitis caused by exposure to poison ivy, poison oak, and other oil-transmitted organic skin-irritants. Samuel Simeon Fels (February 16, 1860 in Yanceyville, North Carolina – June 23, 1950 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Biography Born to a Jewish family in Yanceyville, North Carolina, Fels family relocated to Philadelphia, where Samuel's older brother Joseph Fels founded a soap manufacturing company, Fels & Co., which found success with the product Fels-Naptha. Samuel became the company's first president, a post he held until his death at age 90. Philanthropy An active philanthropist, in 1936, Fels established the Samuel S. Allan Herbert Miller Fels (born 7 February 1942) is an Australian economist, lawyer and public servant. He was most widely known in his role as chairman of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) from its inception in 1995 until 30 June 2003. Upon his retirement from the ACCC, he became foundation dean of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) until January 2013. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in June 2001. His book, ''Tough Customer: Chasing a better deal for battlers'', was published in September 2019 by Melbourne University Press. Adler Fels Winery is a California winery based in Sonoma that produces over 100 different wine labels in addition to production under its own Adler Fels brand. These include private labels for various restaurants, hotels and retailers. History Adler Fels Winery was founded in Sonoma Valley in 1979 by David and Ayn Coleman. Der Fels ( en, The Rock) was group of German Expressionist artists that existed from around 1920 to 1927. History The group's origins lay in the meeting of Franz Bronstert, Fritz Fuhrken and Georg Philipp Wörlen in a World War I prisoner of war camp in Ripon, England. Other members of the group were Reinhard Hilker and the Austrian Carry Hauser. Wörlen, who was significantly older than the other members, was the driving force.
