The Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) is a multi-professional body which is the standard setting body for clinical teachers in the United Kingdom. It was formed in 2006 and has developed recognised frameworks for educators. Activities The academy has stated aims which relate to the advancement of medical education for the public benefit. This includes developing a transparent career structure for specialist medical educators. The academy funds some research, including gathering evidence in support of their policies. History The academy was established in October 2006. It became the first professional organisation for medical educators which was designed to offer career support to members through a registerable qualification and professional accreditation. By January 2008, the academy had internal governance structures in place. The academy published the first professional standards for medical educators in 2009. John Bligh (medical Educator)
John Bligh is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Education and a former dean at Cardiff University School of Medicine 2014–2016. He was the first elected President of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME). Education and early career Bligh studied and University of St Andrews and University of Manchester graduating in medicine. He worked as a general practitioner at the Lache Health Centre in Chester for 11 years. He became a fellow of the RCGP. Medical education He was head of the department of health care education at the University of Liverpool. In 1995, he was appointed Professor of Primary Care Education, then Professor of Medical Education. He joined the foundation staff of the Peninsula Medical School in 2001. In 2010 he took up a position at Cardiff University as Professor of Clinical Education and Director of the Institute of Clinical Education.
