Feldmeilen is a village (''Wacht'') within the municipality of Meilen in the Canton of Zürich in Switzerland. Geography Feldmeilen is located in the district of Meilen in the Pfannenstiel region on the northwestern shore of the Zürichsee (Lake Zürich) between Zürich-Seefeld and Rapperswil. It is around 10 km from Zürich. Demographics, education and economics Feldmeilen belongs politically to the municipality of Meilen and is its largest village. Schools on ''Primarschule'' level are situated in the village; higher school levels are located in Meilen. Parts of the Swarovski International Holding are situated in the village as well as the Raggi-Verlag, a publishing house. Transportation Herrliberg-Feldmeilen railway station is shared with the neighbouring municipality of Herrliberg. Meilen
Meilen is a municipality in the district of Meilen in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland. History Archaeological finds in Meilen date back more than 4,000 years. In January 1854 the level of lake Zürich was particularly low and the locals took the chance to reclaim some land. During this undertaking prehistoric objects from the Pfyn, Horgen and early Bronze Age cultures were unearthed providing clear evidence of early settlement. The locals also unearthed coins from Roman times (1st to 3rd century AD). One of the Roman roads connected ''Turicum'' (Zürich) with places up to ''Chur'' and passed by Meilen. Many findings were discovered during more recent road construction. Parts of Meilen were possessions of monasteries, including the monastery of ''St. Gallen'', the ones of ''Einsiedeln'' and ''Säckingen'', or the more local ''Grossmünster'' of Zürich. Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps are a series of prehistoric pile dwelling (or stilt house) settlements in and around the Alps built from about 5000 to 500 BC on the edges of lakes, rivers or wetlands. In 2011, 111 sites located variously in Switzerland (56), Italy (19), Germany (18), France (11), Austria (5) and Slovenia (2) were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. In Slovenia, these were the first World Heritage Sites to be listed for their cultural value. Excavations conducted at some of the sites have yielded evidence regarding prehistoric life and the way communities interacted with their environment during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages in Alpine Europe. Meilen–Rorenhaab is one of the 111 serial sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ''Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps'', of which 56 are located in Switzerland. Stilt House
Stilt houses (also called pile dwellings or lake dwellings) are houses raised on stilts (or piles) over the surface of the soil or a body of water. Stilt houses are built primarily as a protection against flooding; they also keep out vermin. The shady space under the house can be used for work or storage. Arctic Houses where permafrost is present, in the Arctic, are built on stilts to keep permafrost under them from melting. Permafrost can be up to 70% water. While frozen, it provides a stable foundation. However, if heat radiating from the bottom of a home melts the permafrost, the home goes out of level and starts sinking into the ground.
