Jürg Federspiel
Jürg Fortunat Federspiel (28 June 1931 – 12 January 2007) was a Swiss writer, born in Kemptthal, Canton Zurich. Federspiel authored more than 20 novels and short story collections. Background and education Federspiel grew up in Davos and attended secondary school in Basel. From 1951 he worked as a journalist and film critic for several Swiss newspapers, and spent time in Germany, France, Great Britain, Ireland and the USA. Career His first notable work was a collection of short stories, ''Orangen und Tode'' ("Oranges and death") in 1961. In the English-speaking world his best-known work was '' The Ballad of Typhoid Mary''. A historical novel about the life of Mary Mallon, it was published in German in 1982, and in English translation a year later by Random House. Towards the end of his life, he lived alternately in Basel and New York City. His last published book was ''Mond ohne Zeiger'' ("Moon without hands"), a collection of poetry in 2001. Frederikke Jakobine Federspiel (1839–1913) was the first female photographer to practice in Denmark. For many years, she ran her own photographic studio in Aalborg, always keeping abreast of the latest developments. Among her clients were the Danish princesses Dagmar and Alexandra who were attracted by her photo enamel jewelry. Early life Born in Horsens, Jutland, she was brought up in a bourgeois home together with her sister and five brothers. Her father died when she was only six after which her mother earned a living as a milliner. After her mother's death in 1874, she went to Hamburg to learn photography. Joseph Michael Federspiel (born May 6, 1950) is a former American football middle linebacker who played ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Federspiel played college football at the University of Kentucky. Federspiel played in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints (1972–1980) and Baltimore Colts in 1981. Torben Per Federspiel (9 April 1905 – 27 November 1994) was a Danish politician. Per Federspiel was the son of lawyer Holger Federspiel (1868–1934) and Asta Nutzhorn (1880–1951). Because his father lived in England at the time, he received part of his schooling in Harrow school. Subsequently, he enrolled at the law school of the University of Copenhagen. As a student, he was secretary to Viggo Berg, his mother's cousin and son of the left wing leader Christen Berg. He graduated in law in 1931 and in 1937 joined the Bar of the Eastern High Court. Working for the legal firm of Max Rothenborg brought him into contact with Jewish clients and gave him an insight into the condition of the Jews in Hitler's Germany. During the Occupation of Denmark, German occupation, he was responsible for arranging the financing of a large part of the resistance movement.
