Federico Del Cupolo
Federico Del Cupolo (Naples, 1884-Milan, 1974) was an Italian orchestra conductor whose activity mainly focussed on Italian opera. His career developed in Italy and abroad spanning 60 years and including some recordings from the early 1950s which have been recently resumed for their historical and artistic significance. Discography In 1929 in Philadelphia he recorded the ouverture of '' La gazza ladra'' by Rossini; in 1951 he recorded with the Orchestra of La Scala the operas '' L'arlesiana'' and ''Adriana Lecouvreur'' by Francesco Cilea, the latter interpreted by Mafalda Favero, Elena Nicolai and Nicola Filacuridi. Mafalda Favero
Mafalda Favero (pseudonym of Giuseppina Favero) (6 January 19033 September 1981) was an Italian operatic soprano. Mafalda Favero was born in Portomaggiore, near Ferrara. When she was 17, she started studying with Alessandro Vezzani at the Bologna Conservatory and attracted the attention of Franco Alfano. She began her professional career in her early 20s in Cremona before moving to Parma where she sang several roles. She eventually transferred to La Scala where she debuted singing Eva in ''Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg'' under Arturo Toscanini in 1929. She remained one of the regular singers at La Scala until 1950, in addition to singing in London (Royal Opera House) in 1937 and 1939, and in the United States (Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera) in 1938. ''The Story of the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut'' ( ) is a novel by Antoine François Prévost. Published in 1731, it is the seventh and final volume of ''Mémoires et aventures d'un homme de qualité'' (''Memoirs and Adventures of a Man of Quality''). The story, set in France and Louisiana in the early 18th century, follows the hero, the Chevalier des Grieux, and his lover, Manon Lescaut. Controversial in its time, the work was banned in France upon publication. Despite this, it became very popular and pirated editions were widely distributed. In a subsequent 1753 edition, the Abbé Prévost toned down some scandalous details and injected more moralizing disclaimers. The work was to become the most reprinted book in French Literature, with over 250 editions published between 1731 and 1981. Nicola Filacuridi (Greek: Νικόλαος Φυλακουρίδης, ''Nikólaos Phylakourídēs'') (Alexandria 1 June 1920 – Sydney 12 February 2009) was an Egyptian-born operatic tenor of Greek origin, who had an illustrious career in Italy in the 1950s. Filacuridi was born in Alexandria, Egypt into a family of Greek origin. He first studied in his native city with Ettore Cordone and made his debut at the Cairo Opera in 1945, as Turiddu in ''Cavalleria rusticana''. Shortly after this, he left for Italy to continue his studies with Federico Del Cupolo. He made his Italian stage debut in Savona, as Alfredo, in 1949. Elena Nicolai
Stoyanka Savova Nikolova ( bg, Стоянка Савова Николова), best known by her stage name Elena Nicolai ( bg, Елена Николай) (24 January 1905 – 24 October 1993), was a Bulgarian operatic mezzo-soprano. Early life and training Nicolai was born in the village of Tzerovo, Pazardzhik, Bulgaria. She spent her childhood in another Bulgarian town, Panagurishte. Francesco Cilea (; 23 July 1866 – 20 November 1950) was an Italian composer. Today he is particularly known for his operas ''L'arlesiana'' and ''Adriana Lecouvreur''. Biography Born in Palmi near Reggio di Calabria, Cilea gave early indication of an aptitude for music when at the age of four he heard a performance of Vincenzo Bellini's ''Norma'' and was greatly affected by it. He was sent to study music at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella in Naples, where he quickly demonstrated his diligence and precocious talent, earning a gold medal from the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione (Department of Education).
