Federico Ardila
Federico Ardila (born 1977) is a Colombian mathematician and DJ who researches combinatorics and specializes in matroid theory. Ardila graduated from MIT with a B.Sc. in Mathematics in 1998 and obtained a Ph.D in 2003 under the supervision of Richard P. Stanley in the same institution. Ardila is currently a professor at the San Francisco State University and additionally holds an adjunct position at the University of Los Andes in Colombia. Early life and education Ardila was born in Bogotá, Colombia. During his childhood Ardila showed great promise in mathematics, scoring the highest amongst his age group in the fourth grade. While attending the college-prep Colegio San Carlos in Bogotá, Ardila represented Colombia in the International Math Olympiad, winning a bronze medal in 1993 and a silver medal in 1994. Joint Math Meetings
The Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) is a mathematics conference hosted annually in early January by the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Frequently, several other national mathematics organizations also participate. The meeting is the largest gathering of mathematicians in the United States, and the largest annual meeting of mathematicians in the world. For example, more than 6000 people attended the 2017 JMM. Several thousand talks, panels, minicourses, and poster sessions are held each year. The JMM also hosts an ''Employment Center'', which is a focal point for the hiring process of academic mathematicians, especially for liberal arts colleges. Many employers conduct their preliminary interview process at the meeting. Often these interviews take place outside the confines of the conference, so the employers may not appear on the official Employment Center listing. Matroid Theory
In combinatorics, a branch of mathematics, a matroid is a structure that abstracts and generalizes the notion of linear independence in vector spaces. There are many equivalent ways to define a matroid axiomatically, the most significant being in terms of: independent sets; bases or circuits; rank functions; closure operators; and closed sets or flats. In the language of partially ordered sets, a finite matroid is equivalent to a geometric lattice. Matroid theory borrows extensively from the terminology of both linear algebra and graph theory, largely because it is the abstraction of various notions of central importance in these fields. Matroids have found applications in geometry, topology, combinatorial optimization, network theory and coding theory. Marcelo Aguiar (mathematician)
Marcelo Aguiar is a Brazilian mixed martial artist. He competed in the Welterweight division. Mixed martial arts career Aguiar made his professional debut against John Cronk at World Vale Tudo Championship 4 on 16 March 1997, in the semifinals of the Vale Tudo 77kg tournament. He won the fight by a rear-naked choke, after almost ten minutes of continuous fighting, and advanced to the finals where he faced Antonio Santos. Aguiar won the tournament final by knockout, stopping Santos after just 49 seconds. Aguiar was scheduled to face Hayato Sakurai at VTJ 1997: Vale Tudo Japan 1997 on 29 November 1997. June Huh
June Huh (full name: June E Huh, ; born 1983) is an Korean-American mathematician who is currently a professor at Princeton University. Previously, he was a professor at Stanford University. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2022. He has been noted for the linkages that he has found between algebraic geometry and combinatorics.
