The Federal Republican Party ( pt, Partido Republicano Federal; PR Federal) was the first attempt at a national political party during the First Brazilian Republic. It was created in 1893, with the fusion of the Republican Party of São Paulo with state-based republican clubs. In 1896, it fell apart due to internal crises. Even in ruins, the party held on until 1898, when Lauro Sodré ran for the presidency of the Republic against the winner Campos Sales. The Federal Republican Party of Las Villas ( es, Partido Republicano Federal de Las Villas) was a political party in Las Villas, Cuba. The party was founded in 1899 by the provincial governor José Miguel Gómez and Carlos Mendieta y Montefur. Pelayo García Santiago was the president of the party. Prominent party members included General José B. Alemán, Dr. Rafael Martínez Ortíz, General José de J. Monteagudo, José Manuel Berenguer, Francisco López Leyva, Lic. Benito Besada, José L. Robau, Eduardo Domínguez, Dr. Orestes Ferrara and Enrique Villuendas. Origins The party announced its programme towards the end of January 1900. The programme called for the formation of a decentralized state with provincial autonomy. On February 25, 1900, a meeting was held in Santiago de Cuba.
