The Federal Records Act of 1950 is a United States federal law that was enacted in 1950. It provides the legal framework for federal records management, including record creation, maintenance, and disposition.Richard J. History The Federal Records Act was created following the recommendations of the Hoover Commission (1947-49). It implemented one of the reforms proposed by Emmett Leahy in his October 1948 report on ''Records Management in the United States Government'', with the goal of ensuring that all federal departments and agencies had a program for records management. The act, and its related regulations, require each federal agency to establish an ongoing program for record management and to cooperate with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Washington National Records Center
The Washington National Records Center (WNRC) in Suitland, Maryland, stores and references Federal Records Act, records of List of federal agencies in the United States, U.S. Federal agencies located in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Physical records are transferred to WNRC when they are no longer needed by the respective agencies but have not met their scheduled retention period, including the records of the Federal judiciary of the United States, Federal Courts in DC and the U.S. Armed Forces, Armed Forces. The Privacy Act of 1974 (, ), a United States federal law, establishes a Code of Fair Information Practice that governs the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of personally identifiable information about individuals that is maintained in systems of records by federal agencies. A system of records is a group of records under the control of an agency from which information is retrieved by the name of the individual or by some identifier assigned to the individual. The Privacy Act requires that agencies give the public notice of their systems of records by publication in the Federal Register. National Personnel Records Center Fire
The National Personnel Records Center fire of 1973, also known as the 1973 National Archives fire, was a fire that occurred at the Military Personnel Records Center in the St. Louis suburb of Overland, Missouri, from July 12–16, 1973. National Personnel Records Center
The National Personnel Records Center(s) (NPRC) is an agency of the National Archives and Records Administration, created in 1966. It is part of the United States National Archives federal records center system and is divided into two large Federal Records Centers located in St. Louis, Missouri, and Valmeyer, Illinois.
