''Fear'' (commonly stylized as ''fear'') is the third studio album by American alternative rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket. The album is their second album for Columbia Records, and was released on August 27, 1991. It became the first commercially successful album for the band, selling over a million copies and was certified platinum three years after release, on September 1, 1994. The album reached #49 on ''Billboards Top 200 Albums in September 1992. Two of the album's singles charted in the US top 40, " All I Want" and "Walk on the Ocean" which peaked at #15 and #18 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, respectively. Background Toad the Wet Sprocket's first album, ''Bread & Circus'', was financed and recorded by the band in eight days for $650 in 1989. The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. The weekly tracking period for sales was initially Monday to Sunday when Nielsen started tracking sales in 1991, but was changed to Friday to Thursday in July 2015. This tracking period also applies to compiling online streaming data. Radio airplay, which, unlike sales figures and streaming, is readily available on a real-time basis, is also tracked on a Friday to Thursday cycle effective with the chart dated July 17, 2021 (previously Monday to Sunday and before July 2015, Wednesday to Tuesday). Toad is a common name for certain frogs, especially of the family Bufonidae, that are characterized by dry, leathery skin, short legs, and large bumps covering the parotoid glands. Randy Guss
Randel "Randy" Guss (born March 7, 1967) is an American musician and drummer. He was best known as the drummer for the band Toad the Wet Sprocket from its formation in 1986 until he stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Career Guss formed Toad the Wet Sprocket with Glen Phillips, Todd Nichols, and Dean Dinning in 1986. As of January 2020, Guss left the band and no longer records or performs with them. The primary reason for his departure is that he was unable to tour due to the progression of his osteogenesis imperfecta. Josh Daubin filled in for Randy for a time and has since become the full-time drummer for the band. Since his retirement, Randy has found joy and fulfillment in teaching and continues to do so both remotely and in-person from his studio in San Diego, CA. Glen Phillips (singer)
Glen Phillips (born December 29, 1970) is an American songwriter, lyricist, singer and guitarist. He is best known as the singer and songwriter of the alternative rock group Toad the Wet Sprocket. Personal life Phillips was born to a Reform Jewish family in Santa Barbara, California, United States. Although his family was Jewish, with Glen having a Bar Mitzvah, his family was secular and Buddhism was studied, with this spiritual curiosity being present in his work. He began to make music at 14 years old. Phillips and his ex-wife, Laurel, have three daughters, Sophia, Freya, and Zola. The couple was married from 1989 to 2014. On October 8, 2008, Phillips injured his arm while at a friend's house when a glass coffee table collapsed while he was sitting on it. Phillips had surgery to repair a damaged ulnar nerve and muscle in his left arm. His ability to play guitar was hampered during his recovery, but he had been actively touring in spite of his injury. ''Dulcinea'' is an album by Toad the Wet Sprocket released in 1994. It is their fourth studio album with Columbia Records and the follow-up to their popular album ''fear (Toad the Wet Sprocket album), fear'', which was released in 1991. Two songs from ''Dulcinea'' charted on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts: "Fall Down (Toad the Wet Sprocket song), Fall Down" and "Something's Always Wrong". ''Dulcinea'' was RIAA Certification, RIAA Certified Gold on September 1, 1994 and Platinum on July 31, 1995. The album's name is a reference to the Dulcinea, love interest in Miguel de Cervantes' classic Spanish novel, ''Don Quixote''. At least two songs on the album allude to themes found in the novel. "Crowing" is a song about a person who does not know how to hold on to a lover. ''Bread & Circus'' is the debut album by American alternative rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket, originally self-released on cassette in 1988, and re-released in 1989 by Columbia Records. In May 2009, the band announced plans to re-release ''Bread & Circus'', out of print since 2001, in a remastered edition with expanded artwork and unreleased tracks culled from the album sessions. In 2010, the band signed a deal with Primary Wave to handle their back catalog and licensing. The reissues had been confirmed by lead singer Glen Phillips via Toad's "Fan Questions" portion of their official website for release in 2011, but never occurred. Production The album was recorded over eight days for a total cost of $650. Singer Glen Phillips wrote most of the lyrics when he was only 15 years old. Before agreeing to sign with Columbia, the band insisted that the label re-release the album in unchanged form.
