Louis-François-Sébastien Fauvel
Louis-François-Sebastien Fauvel (born 14 September 1753 in Clermont-en-Beauvaisis; died 12 March 1838 in Smyrna) was a French painter, diplomat and archaeologist who was long stationed in Athens. Fauvel has been called the "Father of Archaeology in Greece and, for his collection and exporting of Greek antiquities, its 'best-known systematic antiquities thief'. Biography Louis-François-Sébastien Fauvel made his first stay in Greece in 1780-1782 in the service of the Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier. His archaeological work was meant to complete the Comte's ''Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce''. When the Count was appointed the ambassador of France to the Sublime Porte in 1784, he again engaged Fauvel. Albert-Auguste Fauvel
Albert-Auguste Fauvel (7 November 1851, in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin – 3 November 1909, in Cherbourg) was a French naturalist, known for providing the first detailed description of the Chinese alligator. In 1872 he joined the Chinese Maritime Customs Service in Peking. Later on, he was based in Chefoo, from where he spent several years investigating the natural history of Shantung province. In 1877 he relocated to Shanghai, and in 1882–84 was stationed in Hankou. Charles Adolphe Albert Fauvel
Charles Adolphe Albert Fauvel (1840, Caen -1921) was a French lawyer and amateur entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera. He described and named 1,851 species and 96 genera in Staphylinidae. He wrote nearly 250 papers in the ''Revue d’ Entomologie'', a journal he founded, and a multi-volume work, ''Faune gallo-rhénane''. For unknown reasons, he abruptly stopped publishing in 1910 and became a recluse for the rest of his life. Charles Fauvel
Charles Fauvel (31 December 1904 - 10 September 1979) was a French aircraft designer noted for his tailless and flying wing designs and, in particular, his sailplanes. Fauvel became interested in soaring after witnessing a competition at Vauville in 1925, and set out to design a competition glider with minimal drag, settling on the flying wing formula based on the work of Georges Abrial and René Arnoux. One of his designs, the AV.10 was the first tailless design to attain a French Certificate of Navigability. His greatest commercial success was the AV.36 sailplane, first flown in 1951. Fauvel's other achievements included a number of aerial world records, including the world altitude and duration records for an aircraft under 400 kg, which he set in September 1929. John Fauvel
John Fauvel (21 July 1947 – 12 May 2001) was a British mathematician and historian of mathematics. Education Fauvel was from Scotland, where his father was a principal, and he attended Trinity College, Glenalmond. He then studied mathematics at the University of Essex, where he graduated in 1970, and at the University of Warwick, where he obtained his master's degree in 1973. In 1977, he obtained his MPhil from the University of Warwick under the supervision of David Orme Tall, with a thesis entitled ''Fuzzy Theory''. Pierre Louis André Fauvel (8 October 1866, in Cherbourg – 12 September 1958, in Angers) was a French zoologist, who specialized in the study of ''polychaetes''. William LeBoutillier Fauvel (January 5, 1850 – February 8, 1897) was a merchant and political figure in Quebec, Canada. He represented Bonaventure in the House of Commons of Canada from 1891 to 1897 as a Liberal member. Biography He was born in Percé, Canada East, the son of John Fauvel and Henriette-Marie Le Boutillier, both originally from Jersey, and was educated in Jersey. He entered the cod trade with his father and, with his older brothers, John Bertram and George Philip, took over the business when his father retired in 1879. He settled at Paspébiac. Fauvel married Emma Du Heaume in 1881. In 1886, he became interim manager for Le Boutillier Brothers on behalf of its creditors and decided to purchase the business with other partners. Fauvel served as mayor of New Carlisle and was vice-consul for Portugal at Paspébiac. He was also president of the Agricultural Society for Bonaventure. The ''Roman de Fauvel'' is a 14th-century French allegorical verse romance of satirical bent, generally attributed to , a clerk at the French royal chancery. The original narrative of 3,280 octosyllabics is divided into two books, dated to 1310 and 1314 respectively, during the reigns of Philip IV and Louis X. In 1316–7 Chaillou de Pesstain produced a greatly expanded version. The romance features Fauvel, a fallow-colored horse who rises to prominence in the French royal court, and through him satirizes the self-serving hedonism and hypocrisy of men, and the excesses of the ruling estates, both secular and ecclesiastical. The antihero's name can be broken down to mean "false veil", and also forms an acrostic ''F-A-V-V-E-L'' with the letters standing for the human vices: Flattery, Avarice, Vileness, Variability (Fickleness), Envy, and Laxity.
