Fatimah Hasan Delais
Fatimah Hasan Delais (1915-1953), also known by the pen name Hamidah, was an Indonesian novelist and poet. Her novel ''Kehilangan mestika'' (Indonesian: Loss of the jewel), 1935, was among the first by a female author to be published by Balai Pustaka; she was one of only a handful of Indonesian women authors to be published at all in the Dutch East Indies, alongside Saadah Alim, Sariamin Ismail, Soewarsih Djojopoespito and a few others. Biography Early life Fatimah was born in Muntok, Bangka Island, Dutch East Indies on June 13, 1915. She was educated in the ''Meisjes Normaalschool'', a Dutch school for girls in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra. After graduating from there she returned to Muntok and taught at the independent Malay school there (the ''Sekolah Rakjat''), then at the ''Palembang Instituut''. Poedjangga Baroe
''Poedjangga Baroe'' (pronounced ; Perfected spelling: ''Pujangga Baru'', also known by the intermediate spelling ''Pudjangga Baru'') was an Indonesian ''avant-garde'' literary magazine published from July 1933 to February 1942. It was founded by Armijn Pane, Amir Hamzah, and Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana. From the turn of the 20th century, the native people of the Dutch East Indies began to hold a greater degree of nationalism, evidenced in part by the establishment of several nationalist publications. Armijn, Hamzah, and Alisjahbana, three writers from Sumatra, laid the foundation for their magazine in September 1932. They sent letters to forty contributors to the literary section of the newspaper '' Pandji Poestaka'' requesting submissions, as well as support from ten sultanates. Pangkal Pinang is the capital and largest city of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province in Indonesia. Linus Suryadi AG
Linus Suryadi Agustinus, commonly known Linus Suryadi AG or Linus Suryadi AGN was born in Sleman, Indonesia on 3 March 1951 and died in Yogyakarta on 30 July 1999 at the age of 48. Linus Suryadi studied at IKIP Sanata Dharma and began publishing poems and essays while still in his late teens. He studied English in college but left before completion, and worked on various newspapers and magazines in Yogyakarta. According to Harry Aveling, Suryadi's prose-lyric ''Pengakuan Pariyem'' (Pariyem's Confession) attracted considerable attention for its bold use of Javanese words and phrases. In ''Pengakuan Pariyem'', Suryadi describes the life of a female servant of a noble family which is limited by the traditions of the court town of Yogyakarta. Even though this prose poem was hailed as a penetrating analysis of culture that reveals Javanese social life, Niels Mulder suggests that it is basically an idealization of a system of values that belongs to the past. HB Jassin
Hans Bague Jassin (31 July 1917 – 11 March 2000), better known as HB Jassin, was an Indonesian literary critic, documentarian, and professor. Born in Gorontalo to a bibliophilic petroleum company employee, Jassin began reading while still in elementary school, later writing published reviews before finishing high school. After a while working in the Gorontalo regent's office, he moved to Jakarta where he worked at the state publisher Balai Pustaka. After leaving the publisher, he attended the University of Indonesia and later Yale. Returning to Indonesia to be a teacher, he also headed ''Sastra'' magazine. ''Horison'', a literary magazine, was started in July 1966 by Jassin and Mochtar Lubis as a successor to ''Sastra'', and was edited by Taufiq Ismail, Ds.
