Fassifern is a List of suburbs in Greater Newcastle, New South Wales, suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie, Greater Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, located west of Lake Macquarie (New South Wales), Lake Macquarie. The Newcastle and Central Coast railway line, Sydney-Newcastle railway line runs through Fassifern railway station, which is a major station along the line. There used to be a branch line between Fassifern Station and nearby Toronto, New South Wales, Toronto, but this has been replaced by a bus service, aptly named "The Train". History The Aboriginal people, in this area, the Awabakal, were the first people of this land. Fassifern was first developed as a result of sawmill and coal mining operations in the area. The Casuarinaceae are a family of dicotyledonous flowering plants placed in the order Fagales, consisting of four genera and 91 species of trees and shrubs native to eastern Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, Malesia, Papuasia, and the Pacific Islands. At one time, all species were placed in the genus ''Casuarina''. Lawrence Alexander Sidney Johnson separated out many of those species and renamed them into the new genera of ''Gymnostoma'' in 1980 and 1982, ''Allocasuarina'' in 1982, and ''Ceuthostoma'' in 1988, with some additional formal descriptions of new species in each other genus. At the time, it was somewhat controversial. The monophyly of these genera was later supported in a 2003 genetics study of the family. Mangrove
A mangrove is a shrub or tree that grows in coastal saline water, saline or brackish water. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Mangroves are taxonomically diverse, as a result of convergent evolution in several plant families. They occur worldwide in the tropics and subtropics and even some temperate coastal areas, mainly between latitudes 30° N and 30° S, with the greatest mangrove area within 5° of the equator. Mangrove plant families first appeared during the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene epochs, and became widely distributed in part due to the plate tectonics, movement of tectonic plates. Macquarie College is an independent Seventh-day Adventist co-educational early learning, primary and secondary day school, located in the Newcastle suburb of Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia. The college is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system. Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH), or pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES), is a type of hydroelectric energy storage used by electric power systems for load balancing. The method stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. Low-cost surplus off-peak electric power is typically used to run the pumps. During periods of high electrical demand, the stored water is released through turbines to produce electric power. Although the losses of the pumping process make the plant a net consumer of energy overall, the system increases revenue by selling more electricity during periods of peak demand, when electricity prices are highest. Awabakal
The Awabakal people , are those Aboriginal Australians who identify with or are descended from the Awabakal tribe and its clans, Indigenous to the coastal area of what is now known as the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Their traditional territory spread from Wollombi in the west, to the Lower Hunter River near Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the north. The name Kuringgai, also written Guringai, has often been used as a collective denominator of the Awabakal and several other tribes in this belt, but Norman Tindale has challenged it as an arbitrary coinage devised by ethnologist John Fraser in 1892. For Tindale, Kuringgai was synonymous with Awabakal. Arthur Capell however asserted that there was indeed evidence for a distinct Kuringgai language, which, in Tindale's schema, would imply they were a distinct people from the Awabakal. Fassifern Railway Station
Fassifern railway station is located on the Main Northern line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the City of Lake Macquarie suburb of Fassifern, opening in 1888. The station has three platforms, although only two are in use, the third being the former branch-line platform for the Toronto line that closed in 1990. North of the line is a balloon loop for the Newstan Colliery that is served by Southern Shorthaul Railroad hauled trains. In 1984, a footbridge was installed as part of the electrification of the line. It was replaced in 1994 when lifts were added.
