The first Faroese national football league ( Meistaradeildin) was held in 1942. From 1942 until 1978, all Faroese football was governed by ÍSF (the Faroese Sports Association). Tvøroyrar Bóltfelag is a Faroese football club from Tvøroyri, currently playing in the Betrideildin, the top tier of Faroese football. TB Tvøroyri is the oldest football club in the Faroe Islands, and also one of the oldest in the Danish Realm, in which the Faroe Islands are a self-governing country. After the end of the 2016 season, it was decided on 15 December 2016 that the three clubs of the island Suðuroy, which are TB Tvøroyri, FC Suðuroy and Royn Hvalba would merge into a new club for the 2017 season. The merger will not be complete until 2018 and the name will be all three names together for the 2017 season: TB/FC Suðuroy/Royn. Klaksvíkar Ítróttarfelag ( Faroese for ''Sports Club of Klaksvík''), commonly known as KÍ, is a Faroese professional football club based in Klaksvík. The club was founded in 1904 and is one of the most successful Faroese football clubs, having won the Faroe Islands Premier League 20 times and the Faroe Islands Cup 6 times. The club wears blue and white and plays matches at the Við Djúpumýrar stadium. History KÍ won the inaugural edition of Faroese top-tier football in 1942. Víkingur Gøta
Víkingur is a semi-professional association football, football club in the Faroe Islands. The club was founded in 2008 after the merger of GÍ Gøta and Leirvík ÍF. The club is based in Leirvík, while the Serpugerði Stadium, stadium is in Norðragøta. Both villages are part of the same municipality Eysturkommuna, located on the island of Eysturoy and about 5 kilometers away from each other. The club won the Faroese championship for the first time in the 2016 season. In the 2017 season, Vikingur won the championship again.
