Farmington Historic District (Farmington, Michigan)
Farmington Historic District is the town center of Farmington, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The area roughly corresponds to the section of Grand River Avenue and Shiawassee Avenue from Warner Street to junction of Grand River and Shiawassee. History In 1823, Arthur Power, a devout Quaker originally from Farmington, New York, purchased a number of tracts of land in this area. He moved to Michigan in 1824 with his family, and a number of other Quaker families followed suit. By 1826, the location of the village of Farmington was firmly established along Shiawassee Trail, and the settlement boasted at least three churches, a school, two taverns, and several other merchants. There were also several dairies and cheese factories, a small foundry, and at least four lumber and grist mills. Farmington is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a northern suburb of Metro Detroit. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census, the population was 10,372. It is surrounded by Farmington Hills, Michigan, Farmington Hills, except for a small portion bordered by Livonia, Michigan, Livonia to the south. Greek Revival Architecture
The Greek Revival was an architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832. It revived many aspects of the forms and styles of ancient Greek architecture, in particular the Greek temple, with varying degrees of thoroughness and consistency. A product of Hellenism, it may be looked upon as the last phase in the development of Neoclassical architecture, which had for long mainly drawn from Roman architecture. The term was first used by Charles Robert Cockerell in a lecture he gave as Professor of Architecture to the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1842. Farmington, New York
Farmington is a town located in the northern part of Ontario County, New York, United States. The population was 14,275 at the 2020 census. History Farmington was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The town was formed along with its county in 1789, and settlement of the region began the same year. Many of the early settlers were Quakers from Berkshire County, Massachusetts. In 1824, Arthur Power left Farmington with two of his sons and other Quakers to found Farmington, Michigan. The Farmington Quaker Crossroads Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Farmington Civic Theatre
The historic Farmington Civic Theater is located in downtown Farmington, Michigan. The theater opened in 1940 and is still in operation. The Civic is a historical site. History The Farmington Civic Theater was constructed in 1939/1940 and officially opened September 20, 1940. The movie theater was built on the site of a vacant A&P Supermarket, which was torn down to make way for the new theater. The property was owned by Louis Rose (Louis Rose Builders-Detroit). He was also primarily responsible for the construction of the new building. The plans called for Associate Theatres Inc. to operate the movie business operations. The company operated a string of movie houses throughout Detroit and Michigan at the time. Edward Hohler became the Manager of the Civic Theatre and stayed on when the business was taken over by Community Theaters in 1943.
