Farm to Market Road 331 (FM 331) is a farm to market road in eastern Austin County, Texas. Route description FM 331 begins at an intersection with SH 36 north of Sealy. The route travels to the north into the small community of Burleigh, where it has a brief concurrency with FM 529. It continues northward, roughly paralleling the Brazos River to its east, before state maintenance ends at Oil Field Road near the community of Raccoon Bend. Oil Field Road continues into the town and provides access to SH 159. History FM 331 was originally designated along a stretch from SH 159 in Bellville to Burleigh on June 16, 1945. Sealy, Texas
Sealy is a city in Austin County in southeastern Texas, United States. The population was 6,839 at the 2020 census. Sealy is located west of the downtown Houston area, on the most eastern part of the Texas-German belt region, an area settled by German emigrants. History San Felipe, Texas, sold part of its original township to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad to create Sealy in 1879. Sealy gets its name after business tycoon and majority stock holder of the GCSF RR, George Sealy of Galveston. In 1881, Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, filled a request for a cotton-filled mattress which started a company. He named this the Sealy Mattress Company after the town. Business grew exponentially, which led to more innovation and several patents, such as a machine that compressed cotton. Raccoon Bend is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Austin County, Texas, Austin County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 400 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History The area of Austin County west of the Brazos River was first settled in the early 1900s and the community of Raccoon Bend grew when the Humble Oil, Humble Oil and Refining Company drilled oil well, oil and gas wells and opened the Raccoon Bend oilfield in 1927. The community had numerous houses, businesses relating to oil, and a church in the 1930s. A cemetery named Pleasant Grove Cemetery was also in the community. Its population was 400 in 2000. State Highway 36 (SH 36) runs from Freeport to Abilene. It was designated as the 36th Division Memorial Highway between Cameron and Sealy by the Texas Legislature in 1985. History SH 36 was originally proposed on November 21, 1917, as a route from Cisco to Waco. On December 20, 1917, this became part of SH 18. On November 20, 1917, an intercounty highway was designated from Goldthwaite to Temple. On January 24, 1918, the intercounty highway was extended to Cameron. State Highway 159 (SH 159) is a Texas state highway that runs from La Grange to Fayetteville in Fayette County, through Industry and Bellville in Austin County, and ends at Hempstead in Waller County. The route was designated on March 19, 1930 from SH 73 east to Hempstead as a renumbering of SH 73A. On December 8, 1932, it was extended west to northeast of La Grange, replacing part of SH 73, which had been rerouted further south earlier.
