Faras Hamdan
Faras Hamdan ( ar, فارس حمدان; he, פארס חמדאן, 1910 – 29 November 1966) was an Israeli Arab politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Agriculture and Development party between 1951 and 1959. Biography Hamdan was born in Baqa al-Gharbiyye during the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman era. Ahmed Faras ( ar, أحمد فرس; born 7 December 1946) is a Moroccan former footballer who played as a striker for Chabab Mohammédia at club level and Morocco internationally. Faras was named African Footballer of the Year in 1975. In 2006, Faras was selected by CAF as one of the best 200 African football players of the last 50 years. Club career Faras played for Chabab Mohammédia between 1965 and 1982, winning the Moroccan League in 1981 and finishing as the league's top-scorer in 1969 and 1973. He retired in 1982, after spending 17 years with the club. International career Faras was a member of Morocco national team from 1965 to 1979, wearing the captain's armband for eight consecutive years, starting from 1971. At international level, Faras took part in the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, and the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, before leading his team to African Cup of Nations success in 1976. Mestre João Faras, better known simply as Mestre João ('Master John"), was an astrologer, astronomer, physician and surgeon of King Manuel I of Portugal who accompanied Pedro Álvares Cabral in the discovery of Brazil in 1500, and wrote a famous letter identifying the Southern Cross constellation. Background The celebrated 1500 letter of Mestre João Faras was discovered in the Portuguese royal archives by the historian Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, and published for the first time in 1843. Despite much search, the figure of Mestre João Faras remains elusive. In his 1500 letter, Mestre João identifies himself simply as a ''bacherel'' of arts and medicine ('bachelor' was a general term for someone with formal learning) and a personal physician and surgeon of the King Manuel I of Portugal.
