Fantasie, Op. 28 (Mendelssohn)
Fantasie in F-sharp minor, Op. 28, by Felix Mendelssohn, is a work composed for piano in three movements to be played without pause. This work was also known as ''Sonata écossaise'' (Scottish Sonata). First an Allegro in F-sharp minor in a loose sonata form, then an Allegro con moto in A major, and third a finale in F-sharp minor, in sonata form with double-bar. Its final version dates from 1833; the original version was probably composed as early as 1828. In music a sonata (; pl. ''sonate'') literally means a piece ''played'' as opposed to a cantata (Latin and Italian ''cantare'', "to sing"), a piece ''sung''. The term evolved through the history of music, designating a variety of forms until the Classical era, when it took on increasing importance. Sonata is a vague term, with varying meanings depending on the context and time period. By the early 19th century it came to represent a principle of composing large-scale works. It was applied to most instrumental genres and regarded—alongside the fugue—as one of two fundamental methods of organizing, interpreting and analyzing concert music.
