Fanny Metcalfe
Fanny Metcalfe (1 February 1829 – 30 May 1897) was a pioneering educator who set up a school for girls, and was involved in setting up more than one women's college. Early life and education Fanny Metcalfe was born on 1 February 1829 to Charles James and Elizabeth Metcalfe of Roxton House, Roxton, Bedfordshire. She had an older sister, Anna Sophia, and at least one brother. She was educated both at home and in Berlin. She and her sister were sent there in c. 1850 to improve their language skills and to assist them in learning the skills necessary to earn a living. With their mother, the sisters founded a school, "Highfield", in Hendon by renting a villa and opening a boarding school in 1858. Within 5 years they moved to larger purpose-built premises. Soon it was one of the top schools for young ladies. Alumnae included Ida Margaret Graves Poore and Blanche Athena Clough. Roxton, Bedfordshire
Roxton is a small village and civil parish in the Borough of Bedford, Bedfordshire, England about north-east of the county town of Bedford. The 2011 census gives the population of Roxton as 348. Geography Roxton is southwest of St Neots, west of Cambridge and north of Central London. Area The civil parish covers an area of . The River Great Ouse forms the parish's eastern and most of its southern boundary, and the A421 road its western. Landscape The village lies within the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Claylands as designated by Natural England. Bedford Borough Council classifies the local landscape as the Great Ouse Clay Valley. The surrounding area is mostly arable farmland. Roxton Park is an area of grassland dotted with mature trees. There are lakes formed from old sand and gravel pits in the southeast corner of the parish by the Ouse. Westfield College
Westfield College was a small college situated in Hampstead, London, from 1882 to 1989. It was the first college to aim to educate women for University of London degrees from its opening. The college originally admitted only women as students and became coeducational in 1964. In 1989, it merged with Queen Mary College. The merged institution was named Queen Mary and Westfield College until 2013, when the name was legally changed to Queen Mary University of London. History The college was founded in 1882 by Constance Louise Maynard (1849–1935) and Ann Dudin Brown with five students in Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead. St Mary's Church, Hendon
St Mary's Church is the oldest (and Church of England) parish church in Hendon in the London Borough of Barnet. The mother church of Christ Church, Brent Street, the two form one parish in the Diocese of London. History The church may date to Anglo-Saxon England. A spurious charter of "959" records the rectory as being owned by Westminster Abbey, and a priest is mentioned in 1086 in the Domesday Book, strongly implying the existence of a church, which was separately documented six years earlier. Associated archaeology has found near-certain Anglo-Saxon burials. The first definite date is the church built around 1080, and a Norman font (pictured below right) is still in use. The building has a thirteenth-century nave, chapel, north aisle and south arcade, together with traces of painting on the walls.
