Family Planning Association
FPA (Family Planning Association) was a UK registered charity (number 250187) working to enable people to make informed choices about sex and to enjoy sexual health. It was the national affiliate for the International Planned Parenthood Federation in the United Kingdom. It celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2010. Its motto was "''Talking sense about sex''". The charity was placed into liquidation on 15 May 2019, but the FPA name continues as a limited company selling sexual health resources. History FPA was founded in 1930 when five birth control societies merged to form the National Birth Control Council (NBCC). Charles Vickery Drysdale FRSE was critical within its foundation. Its stated purpose was "that married people may space or limit their families and thus mitigate the evils of ill health and poverty". Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a field of research, healthcare, and social activism that explores the health of an individual's reproductive system and sexual wellbeing during all stages of their life. The term can also be further defined more broadly within the framework of the World Health Organization's (WHO) definition of health―as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity"― to denote sexual wellbeing, encompassing the ability of an individual to have responsible, satisfying and safe sex and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so. Margaret Pyke
Margaret Amy Pyke (née Chubb; 1893–1966) was a British family planning activist and pioneer. A founding member of the British National Birth Control Committee (NBCC), later known as the Family Planning Association (FPA), she succeeded Lady Gertrude Denman as chairman of that organization in 1954. Pyke was also involved in the founding of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. She was appointed OBE in 1963. Anne Judith Weyman OBE (born 1 February 1943) is a British executive. She was Chief Executive of the Family Planning Association, 1996–2008; and is a Member of the General Medical Council. She is a trustee of the Galapagos Conservation Trust and vice-chair of Britain for Europe, a group campaigning for continued UK membership of the European Union. Biography Weyman was born 1 February 1943 to Stanley Weyman and Rose Weyman. She married Christopher Leonard Bulford in 1977. Jennifer Louise Tonge, Baroness Tonge (''née'' Smith; born 19 February 1941) is a politician in the United Kingdom. She was Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond Park in London from 1997 to 2005. Dame Joan Mary Ruddock, (née Anthony; born 28 December 1943) is a British Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Lewisham Deptford from 1987 to 2015. Ruddock was Minister of State for Energy at the Department of Energy and Climate Change until 11 May 2010. She stood down at the 2015 general election. Jean Shinglewood Medawar, Lady Medawar (''née'' Taylor; 7 February 1913 – 3 May 2005) was a British author and a former chairman of the Family Planning Association, and wife of the British Nobel laureate Sir Peter Brian Medawar. Medawar was born in London, England, the daughter of Katherine Leslie (''née'' Paton) and Charles Henry Shinglewood Taylor. Her father was a physician working in Cambridge. Her mother was an American from St Louis, Missouri. She attended Benenden School in Kent and she won a scholarship to study zoology.
