False Pass, Alaska
False Pass () is a city on Unimak Island, in the Aleutians East Borough, Alaska, Aleutians East Borough of southwestern Alaska, United States. Although the population was marked 397 including seasonal fish processing plant workers at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, approximately 35 residents call it home year-round. History False Pass is an early English name for Isanotski Strait on which the city of False Pass is located. The strait was called "False Pass" by early American sailing ship captains because it was thought to be impassable for their Draft (hull), deep draft vessels at the northern end. A salmon cannery was built on the Unimak Island side of the strait in 1919 which provided the nucleus for the modern settlement. A U.S. post office with the name of False Pass was established in 1921 which gave official status to the community. False Pass Airport is a state owned, public use airport in False Pass, a city in the Aleutians East Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. Scheduled airline service to Cold Bay Airport and Akutan Airport is provided by Grant Aviation As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 505 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 482 enplanements in 2009, and 321 in 2010. It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a ''general aviation'' airport (the ''commercial service'' category requires at least 2,500 enplanements per year). MV Tustumena
M/V ''Tustumena'' is a mainline ferry vessel for the Alaska Marine Highway System. ''Tustumena'' was constructed in 1963 by Christy Corporation in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and refurbished in 1969 in San Francisco. As the only mainline ferry in South-central Alaska and the Aleutian Chain, it principally runs between Kodiak, Seldovia, Port Lions, and Homer with Homer providing a road link to the other communities on the Kenai Peninsula. The only interruptions from this schedule occur when making a voyage out the Aleutian Chain (the Aleutian Chain run consists of the communities of Akutan, Chignik, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, Sand Point, and Unalaska/Dutch Harbor) which the vessel undergoes eight times a year all of which occur during the summer as winter weather becomes too dangerous.
