Falmouth Art Gallery
Falmouth Art Gallery is a publicly funded art gallery in Cornwall, with one of the leading art collections in Cornwall and southwest England, which features work by old masters, major Victorian artists, British and French Impressionists, leading surrealists and maritime artists, children's book illustrators, automata, contemporary painters and printmakers. It is located on The Moor, on the upper floor of the Municipal Buildings above the Library in Falmouth, Cornwall. History Falmouth Art Gallery in its present form opened on the upper floor of the Municipal Buildings on 12 October 1978 and was renovated with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other funding bodies, before being re-opened by Sir Tim Rice on 31 May 1996. Municipal Buildings, Falmouth
The Municipal Buildings are based on The Moor in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. The structure, which currently accommodates both Falmouth Art Gallery and Falmouth Library, is a Grade II listed building. History The first municipal building in Falmouth was the old town hall in the High Street which was built as a Congregational chapel in 1710 and was acquired by the lord of the manor, Martin Lister Killigrew of Arwenack Manor, and presented to the people of Falmouth in 1715. In the late 19th century, the borough leaders decided that a more substantial structure was needed to accommodate a free library and a science and art school as well as the municipal offices: the site they selected on the west side of The Moor had been used as the town quarry. Robert Priseman
Robert Priseman (born in Spondon, Derbyshire in 1965) is a British artist, collector, writer, curator and publisher who lives and works in Essex, England. Over 200 works of art by Priseman are held in art museum collections around the world including the V&A, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Musée de Louvain la Neuve, The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, The Allen Memorial Art Museum, The Mead Art Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art and The National Galleries of Scotland. Henry Scott Tuke
Henry Scott Tuke (12 June 1858 – 13 March 1929), was an English visual artist; primarily a painter, but also a photographer. His most notable work was in the Impressionist style, and he is best known for his paintings of nude boys and young men. Trained at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros and Sir Edward Poynter, Tuke developed a close relationship with the Newlyn School of painters, his work being exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, of which he became a Full Member. In addition to his achievements as a figurative painter, he was an established maritime artist and produced many portraits of sailing ships. William Strang
William Strang (13 February 1859 – 12 April 1921) was a Scottish painter and printmaker, notable for illustrating the works of Bunyan, Coleridge and Kipling. Early life Strang was born at Dumbarton, the son of Peter Strang, a builder, and was educated at the Dumbarton Academy. For fifteen months after leaving school he worked in the counting-house of a firm of shipbuilders, then in 1875, when he was sixteen, went to London. There he studied art under Alphonse Legros at the Slade School for six years. Strang had great success as an etcher and became assistant master in the etching class. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, and his work was part of its first exhibition in 1881. Harry Ousey
Frederick Henry Ousey (1915–1985) was a British post-modernist painter whose work has been described as "very important in the 20th century British art scene", and exhibited across Europe. Early life Ousey was born in Longsight, Manchester, on 21 November 1915. He trained as an architect. Alfred Munnings
Sir Alfred James Munnings, (8 October 1878 – 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War Memorials Fund, he earned several prestigious commissions after the Great War that made him wealthy. Between 1912 and 1914 he was a member of the Newlyn School of artists. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics, the 1932 Summer Olympics, and the 1948 Summer Olympics. Munnings was president of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1944 until his death. Laura Knight
Dame Laura Knight ( Johnson; 4 August 1877 – 7 July 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. Knight was a painter in the figurative, realist tradition, who embraced English Impressionism. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. Charles Napier Hemy
Charles Napier Hemy (Newcastle-on-Tyne, 24 May 1841 – 30 September 1917, Falmouth) was a British genre and marine painter. He was born to a musical family in Newcastle-on-Tyne, and trained in the Government School of Design, Newcastle, followed by the Antwerp Academy and the studio of Baron Leys. Hemy returned to London in the 1870s, and in 1881 moved to the coastal town of Falmouth in Cornwall. He produced painted figure- and landscapes, but his best-known works are ''Pilchards'' (1897) and ''London River'' (1904) which are in the Tate collections. John Singer Sargent painted a portrait (now in the Falmouth Art Gallery collection) of Hemy when visiting Hemy's Falmouth home, 'Churchfield', in 1905. Edward Coley Burne-Jones
Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet, (; 28 August, 183317 June, 1898) was a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, British painter and designer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood which included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Millais, Ford Madox Brown and Holman Hunt. Frank Brangwyn
Sir Frank William Brangwyn (12 May 1867 – 11 June 1956) was a Welsh artist, painter, watercolourist, printmaker, illustrator, and designer. Brangwyn was an artistic jack-of-all-trades. As well as paintings and drawings, he produced designs for stained glass, furniture, ceramics, glass tableware, buildings and interiors, was a lithographer and woodcutter and was a book illustrator. Art UK is a cultural, education charity in the United Kingdom, previously known as the Public Catalogue Foundation. Since 2003, it has digitised more than 220,000 paintings by more than 40,000 artists and is now expanding the digital collection to include UK public sculpture.
