US Amateur
The United States Amateur Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Amateur, is the leading annual golf tournament in the United States for amateur golfers. It is organized by the United States Golf Association and is currently held each August over a 7-day period. In 1894 there were two tournaments called the "National Amateur Championship". One of them was played at Newport Country Club and was won by William G. Lawrence, and the other took place at Saint Andrew's Golf Club and was won by Laurence B. Stottard. This state of affairs prompted Charles B. Macdonald of the Chicago Golf Club to call for the creation of a national governing body to authorize an official national championship, and the Amateur Golf Association of the United States, which was soon to be renamed the United States Golf Association, was formed on December 22 of that year. Peter Teravainen
Peter Teravainen (born April 23, 1956) is an American professional golfer. He briefly played on the PGA Tour, in 1980, but did not have much success. For the remainder of his career he primarily played overseas, culminating with wins at the 1995 Czech Open on the European Tour and the 1996 Japan Open on the Japan Golf Tour. Early life Teravainen was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts and raised in Duxbury, Massachusetts. His father was a high school athletic director and basketball coach. His mother was a nurse. He is one of four children. Amateur career Teravainen attended Tabor Academy and Yale University on scholarship. He played on the Yale Bulldogs golf team at college. Bill Murchison
William J. Murchison Jr. (born August 2, 1956) is an American professional golfer. Murchison played on the PGA Tour and its developmental tour (Ben Hogan Tour/Nike Tour, now Web.com Tour) from 1978 to 1996. On the PGA Tour (1978–80, 1983, 1993), his best finish was T-12 at the 1980 B.C. Open. On the Nike Tour (1992, 1994–96), he won the 1995 Nike Tallahassee Open. Murchison won a total of thirty-four professional events on various tours, including the Spacecoast, North Florida PGA, and Mid-Atlantic Tour. His career low round was 61, shot at the Goodyear Golf Club during a tournament on the National Golf Tour in 1979. Murchison served as the president and CEO of Murchison Drilling Schools, a company founded by his father, that trains oil field drilling personnel. Jaime Gonzalez (golfer)
Jaime Gonzalez (born 25 July 1954) is a Brazilian professional golfer. He is one of the few from his country to have enjoyed success on the international circuit. Gonzalez was born in São Paulo to a golfing family. His father Mário won the Spanish Open as an amateur in 1947. Gonzalez had a lot of success an amateur, winning the Brazil Amateur Championship three times (1969, 1971, 1972) as a teenager. He would win the tournament one more time when he was in college. He attended Oklahoma State University in the United States and won the individual title at the 1974 Eisenhower Trophy. Gonzalez turned professional in 1977 and shortly thereafter represented Brazil twice in the World Cup, in 1978 and 1979. Gonzalez earned membership on the PGA Tour for three seasons (1978, 1980, 1981) but did not have much success. His only top ten was a T-5 at the 1980 Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open. Lance Ten Broeck
Lance Ten Broeck (March 21, 1956 – April 30, 2023) was an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, and Champions Tour. Early life and amateur career Ten Broeck was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Beverly, a community on the city's southwest side. He attended the University of Texas, and was a member of the golf team from 1975 to 1976. He was a two-time All-American and winner of the Massingill trophy in 1975. Professional career In 1977, Ten Broeck turned pro. He played in 349 PGA Tour events in his career making the cut 159 times including ten top-10 finishes. John Adams (born May 5, 1954) is an American professional golfer. Adams was born in Altus, Oklahoma and went to college at Arizona State. Adams finished runner-up on the PGA Tour on two occasions, including a playoff loss to Jay Haas at the 1982 Hall of Fame. Adams finished tied for 11th at the 1993 U.S. Open, his best major finish. John Cook (golfer)
John Neuman Cook (born October 2, 1957) is an American professional golfer, who won eleven times on the PGA Tour and was a member of the Ryder Cup team in 1993. He was ranked in the top ten of the Official World Golf Ranking for 45 weeks in 1992 and 1993. Cook currently plays on the PGA Tour Champions and is a studio analyst on Golf Channel. Early years Born in Toledo, Ohio, Cook is the son of PGA Tour official Jim Cook and grew up in southern California. He attended Miraleste High School in Rancho Palos Verdes and graduated in 1976. In addition to golf, Cook was a promising but undersized quarterback in football through his sophomore year. He was advised by his high school golf coach (who also coached football) to concentrate on golf, which would give him his best opportunity for a collegiate scholarship. Kenny Knox
Edward Kenneth Knox (born August 15, 1956) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, and the Champions Tour. Knox was born in Columbus, Georgia. He and his brother were introduced to the game of golf by their mother. He attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida where he earned All-American honors as a member of the golf team. He graduated in 1978, turned professional that year, and joined the PGA Tour in 1982. Knox won three events during his career on the PGA Tour. His first win came at the 1986 Honda Classic. He was the first Monday qualifier to win on the PGA Tour and is the only player to win with a round of 80.
