Fairfield Lake State Park
Fairfield Lake State Park is a closed state park located in Freestone County, Texas, United States, northeast of Fairfield on the shores of Fairfield Lake, the subject of a contentious battle between the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) (which leased and operated the park until June 2023) and a private developer (who purchased the land from the prior owner). The park is . History The park was acquired in 1954 by a Department of Army lease, which extended it until 2004. Texas Power and Light Company (now known as Luminant) constructed a dam at Big Brown Creek to impound water as a cooling source for the nearby Big Brown Power Plant. The dam was completed in 1969. The park was opened to the public in 1976. There are several historical locations in the park, including an historical marker located in the Chancellor Union Cemetery on the park property. Freestone County, Texas
Freestone County is a county in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 19,435. Its county seat is Fairfield. The county was created in 1850 and organized the next year. History Native Americans Archeological evidence of the farming Kichai band of the Caddoan Mississippian culture dates to 200 BCE in the area. The Hernando de Soto expedition of 1541 resulted in violent encounters with the Caddo Native Americans who occupied the area. Spanish and French missionaries carried smallpox, measles, malaria, and influenza as endemic diseases; the Caddo suffered epidemics, as they had no acquired immunity to these new diseases. Eventually, the Caddo were forced to reservations. The Tawakoni branch of Wichita Indians originated as a tribe north of Texas, but migrated south into East Texas. Fairfield is a city in Freestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,850 at the 2020 census, down from 3,094 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Freestone County and was founded as such in 1851. Geography Fairfield is located in the center of Freestone County at (31.721940, –96.158011). Interstate 45 passes through the west side of the city, leading north to Dallas and south to Houston. Access is from Exits 197 and 198. U.S. Route 84 runs directly through the city, leading east to Palestine and west to Waco. Texas State Highway 75 (Fairway) crosses US 84 at the west end of downtown, and leads northwest to Streetman and south to Dew. Luminant is a Texas-based electric utility. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings Corporation. Luminant's operations include electricity generation and wholesaling, mining, construction, and development. The company has capacity for the generation of 18,300 megawatts (MW) of electricity in 20 power plants spread across Texas, of which 2,300 MW come from nuclear power generated at the company's Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, 5,800 MW from coal-fired power plants, and the remainder from natural gas-fired plants. Luminant is also a major purchaser of wind power. Luminant also owns and operates three of the five largest coal mines (by production) in Texas: the Beckville Strip, the Three Oaks Mine, and the Oak Hill Strip. Big Brown Power Plant
Big Brown Power Plant was a 1.15-gigawatt (1,150 MW) coal power plant located northeast of Fairfield near Fairfield Lake State Park in Freestone County, Texas. It was operated by Vistra Corp's subsidiary, Luminant. The plant operated from 1971 to 2018. History Big Brown was constructed by Texas Utilities (now known as Luminant) and went into operation in 1971. It has two units. Big Brown Creek was impounded to form the plant's cooling source. The dam was completed in 1969 creating Fairfield Lake. The power plant used lignite from the nearby Turlington Mine and later supplemented with coal from Peabody Energy's Rawhide Mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. To improve the overall fuel mix and to reduce reliance on the nearby Turlington Mine whose lignite production was decreasing, coal from the Powder River Basin was blended into the fuel beginning in 2000.
