Fair Play (2014 Film)
''Fair Play'' is a 2014 Czech drama film directed by Andrea Sedláčková. It was selected as the Czech entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated. Plot Set in Czechoslovakia in 1983, the film tells the story of Anna, a sprinter who is hoping to compete in the Olympics, and is selected into the national team. She is placed in a special state-run medical treatment where she is given anabolic steroids (" Stromba") by her trainer. Her performance increases but later discovers the negative effect of taking the steroids, causing her to stop using them. Anna's father escaped Czechoslovakia for the West which takes a toll of her mother's career, as she is unable to find any decent job. Additionally, she is under frequent surveillance of the secret service. She sees her daughter's participation in the Olympic Games as the opportunity for Anna to emigrate, so she secretly continues to give her the injections of steroids. She also has cont ... The Czech Republic has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1994 (after the split of Czechoslovakia in January 1993). However, there were also Czech films submitted by Czechoslovakia before it ceased to exist in 1992. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. , three Czech films have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, one of which, Jan Svěrák's ''Kolya'', has won the award. This is a list of submissions to the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of a number of countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. It is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length film produced outside the United States with primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process, reviewing all films submitted. For the 87th Academy Awards, held on 22 February 2015, a submitted motion picture must be released theatrically in its respective country between 1 October 2013 and 30 September 2014. Abbey Road Studios (formerly EMI Recording Studios) is a recording studio at 3 Abbey Road, St John's Wood, City of Westminster, London, England.
