The Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University () is the sixth oldest medical school in Thailand located in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province and is the fourth oldest faculty of Prince of Songkla University, opening in 1972 by royal decree. History Due to a lack of medical and healthcare personnel in Thailand, as well as various healthcare issues in Southern Thailand, the council of Prince of Songkla University requested for the construction of a Faculty of Medicine on 11 September 1968. The project was approved on 17 August 1971 and construction began at the Hat Yai campus of the university. The first cohort of medical students was accepted in June 1973, consisting of 35 students. Teaching was done in the Faculty of Science for the preclinical years and Hatyai Hospital and Songkhla Hospital during the clinical years. Medical education in Thailand was pioneered by King Chulalongkorn, who founded the country's first medical school called the "School of Medical Practitioners" at Siriraj Hospital in 1889, now the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. Surat Thani Hospital () is the main hospital of Surat Thani Province, Thailand. It is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors for the Faculty of Medicine of Thammasat University. It is an affiliated teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University. History Plans for the construction of a hospital in Surat Thani surfaced in 1941, during World War II under the intention to upgrade the health provision in the province, as there was only a health station in the area. However, it was delayed due to the Japanese invasion which took place on 8 December of the same year. Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital () is the main hospital of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand and is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors for the MOPH-Mahidol CPIRD Program. It is an affiliated teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University. History The construction of Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital started in 1952 on a 37 rai piece of land owned by Prince Yugala Dighambara, Prince of Lopburi that was location of the Pho Yai Rot Palace, his place of residence when he was viceroy of the South. Trang Hospital () is the main hospital of Trang Province, Thailand and is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors of the School of Medicine, Walailak University and is an affiliated teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University. History In the early 1950s, Trang only had a health station in the city center (now the location of Trang Hotel) and its operations were transferred to the Ministry of Public Health in 1951. Limited space meant expanding the hospital was difficult, so plans were proposed to build a new hospital on a 53 rai land of the Royal Treasury at Khuan Han. Yala Hospital () is the main hospital of Yala Province, Thailand. It is classified under the Ministry of Public Health as a regional hospital. It has a CPIRD Medical Education Center which trains doctors for the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University. It is also an affiliated teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, Princess of Naradhiwas University.
