Fabrizio Pirovano
Fabrizio Pirovano (1 February 1960 – 12 June 2016) was an Italian professional motorcycle road racer from Biassono. Motorcycle racing career When the Superbike World Championship began in , he was one of its first entrants, finishing as championship runner-up in and , and in the top five four other times. He won 10 races and took 37 further podium finishes. He is in the championship's all-time top 10 for starts, points and podiums. Curiously he never took a World Superbike pole position. He won the Italian Superbike title four times. By the mid-1990s, the World Superbike championship had more international stars (such as Troy Corser and Carl Fogarty) and Pirovano was less competitive. In , a second-place finish at the season-opener at Hockenheim was his only podium, and he left the championship at the end of the year. Austrian Motorcycle Grand Prix
The Austrian motorcycle Grand Prix is a motorcycling event that was part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing season from 1971 to 1997, and then again from 2016 onwards. The event is due to take place at the Red Bull Ring until at least 2025. History The inaugural Austrian grand prix was held in 1971 at the Salzburgring, where it stayed until 1994. In 1995, the Austrian GP was taken off the calendar because the Salzburgring was deemed too dangerous for racing., but would return in 1996 on the then-called Österreichring. In 1997, the Österreichring became the A1-Ring, named after the Austrian mobile network operator A1. For the 1998 season, the Austrian round was scrapped, mainly due to the low number of spectators who visited the races. Hungaroring
The Hungaroring is a motorsport racetrack in Mogyoród, Pest County, Hungary where the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix is held. In 1986, it became the location of the first Formula One Grand Prix behind the Iron Curtain. Bernie Ecclestone wanted a race in the USSR, but a Hungarian friend recommended Budapest. They wanted a street circuit similar to the Circuit de Monaco to be built in the Népliget – Budapest's largest park – but the government decided to build a new circuit just outside the city near a major highway. Construction works started on 1 October 1985. It was built in eight months, less time than any other Formula One circuit. Donington Park
Donington Park is a motorsport circuit located near Castle Donington in Leicestershire, England. The circuit business is now owned by Jonathan Palmer's MotorSport Vision organisation, and the surrounding Donington Park Estate, still owned by the Wheatcroft family, is currently under lease by MotorSport Vision until 2038. It has a capacity of 120,000, and is also the venue of the Download Festival. Originally part of the Donington Hall estate, it was created as a racing circuit during the period between the First and Second World Wars when the German Silver Arrows were battling for the European Championship. Used as a military vehicle storage depot during the Second World War, it fell into disrepair until bought by local construction entrepreneur Tom Wheatcroft. 1988 Superbike World Championship Season
The 1988 Superbike World Championship was the inaugural FIM Superbike World Championship season. The season started on 3 April at Donington Park and finished on 3 October at Manfeild Autocourse after 9 rounds. American Fred Merkel won the riders' championship and Honda won the manufacturers' championship. Race calendar and results The second Le Mans race was not held due to schedule issues. Championship standings For the first ever Superbike World Championship round at Donington Park, and for the only time in the championship's history, the race results were combined to determine an overall winner. For future weekends, it was decided to award half points for each race instead, although the original system was used again at Le Mans due to only one race being run. The Argentine Republic motorcycle Grand Prix is the Argentine round of the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle racing championship. The Grand Prix returned in 2014 with a race at Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo. Brazilian Motorcycle Grand Prix
The Brazilian motorcycle Grand Prix was a motorcycling road racing event that is part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Championship. History The first official Brazilian Grand Prix was held in 1987 at the Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna in Goiânia. Two more races were hosted in the following years until the race was removed from the 1990 calendar due to organisational problems. The event was supposed to return in 1991 in the month of September, but was scrapped in August because of safety concerns of the circuit. In 1992, the Brazilian GP returned after a two-year absence. Due to Bernie Ecclestone's increased involvement of grand prix motorcycle racing at this time, the selected venue to host the race was the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo instead of the previously used circuit in Goiânia. Portuguese Motorcycle Grand Prix
The Portuguese motorcycle Grand Prix is a motorcycling road racing event that is part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Championship. History The event was first held in 1987 at the Jarama circuit in Spain. The reason for this was because the main Portuguese circuit at the time, the Circuito do Estoril, was not yet ready to be used for motorcycle racing. However, Portugal still wanted to host a round in the championship that year and so opted to use the Jarama circuit until their own was ready for use. In 1988, a second race was held at the new Jerez circuit which was also located in Spain. The original plan was to host the race in Portugal at the Estoril circuit, but Jerez was chosen instead. The San Marino and Rimini Riviera Grand Prix is a motorcycling event that is part of the World Motorcycle Racing season. The name of the race is a misnomer as the race has always taken place in Italy, but because there is already an Italian motorcycle Grand Prix, it was called the San Marino Grand Prix because of the track location's proximity to San Marino. The event is due to take place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli until at least 2026. British Motorcycle Grand Prix
The British motorcycle Grand Prix is a motorcycling event that is part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. History Before 1977, the only British round was the Isle of Man TT, which was part of the FIM championship from its inauguration in 1949 until 1976. The Isle of Man TT was the most prestigious event on the Grand Prix motorcycling calendar from 1949 to 1972. After the 1972 event, multiple world champion Giacomo Agostini dropped a bombshell on the motorsports world by stating he would never race at the Isle of Man TT again, saying the 37-mile (62 km) circuit was too dangerous for international competition. His friend Gilberto Parlotti was killed during the event.
