Castiglione Del Lago
Castiglione del Lago is a town in the province of Perugia of Umbria (central Italy), on the southwest corner of Lake Trasimeno. Orvieto is south, Chiusi is to the south west, Arezzo is to the north west, Cortona is to the north and Perugia is to the south east. Geography and urban structure Castiglione del Lago has evolved on what used to be an island - the fourth island of Lake Trasimeno, in its south west region. Ascanio Della Corgna
Ascanio della Corgna (1516 – 3 December 1571) was an Italian condottiere from Umbria. He rose to become Marchese di Castiglione del Lago, in part due to his family connections to a Pope. Biography Ascanio as a young man had followed his uncle to Rome, but his unbridled and violent temperament, disgusted his uncle, and he returned to Perugia. Ascanio was the brother of Cardinal Fulvio Giulio della Corgna, and both were nephews of Julius III, pope from 1550 to 1555. Ascanio is described as having a peripatetic career as a professional soldier for hire, battling during his lifetime Lutherans in Germany and Turks in Malta. He began as a young man when he joined the French army with the siege of Mirandola as a squire for Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, il Cagnino. He later showed marked foolhardy bravery in the siege of Genoa in 1536, receiving wounds. He then participated in the siege of Casale Monferrato, where he was blinded in one eye. Luigi Lanzi
Luigi Lanzi (14 June 1732 – 30 March 1810) was an Italian art historian and archaeologist. When he died he was buried in the church of the Santa Croce at Florence by the side of Michelangelo. Biography Born in Treia, Lanzi was educated as a priest. He entered the Order of the Jesuits, resided at Rome and in 1773 was appointed keeper of the galleries of Florence, where he became president of the Accademia della Crusca. He thereafter studied Italian painting and Etruscan antiquities and language. In the one field his labors are represented by his ''Storia Pittorica dell' Italia'', the first portion of which, containing the Florentine, Sienese, Roman and Neapolitan schools, appeared in 1792, the rest in 1796. Thomas Roscoe (Liverpool 23 June 1791 – 24 September 1871 London) was an English author and translator. Life The fifth son of William Roscoe, he was born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1791, and educated by Dr. W. Shepherd and by Mr. Lloyd, a private tutor. Soon after his father's financial troubles in 1816, which led to bankruptcy, Roscoe began to write in local magazines and journals, and he continued to follow literature as a profession. Stefano Amedei (20 January 1580 – 20 January 1644) was an Italian painter of the early Baroque period, who painted still-life and sacred paintings. Biography Born in Perugia; he trained there with Giulio Cesare Angeli, and developed a studio in Rome. Lupattelli claims he studied perspective under the mathematician Lemme Rossi.
