Fabienne Dufour (born 11 July 1981 in Bastogne) is a retired female butterfly and freestyle swimmer from Belgium, who competed for her native country at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Butterfly Swimming
The butterfly (colloquially shortened to fly) is a swimming stroke swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick (also known as the "dolphin kick"). While other styles like the breaststroke, front crawl, or backstroke can be swum adequately by beginners, the butterfly is a more difficult stroke that requires good technique as well as strong muscles. It is the newest swimming style swum in competition, first swum in 1933 and originating out of the breaststroke. Speed and ergonomics The peak speed of the butterfly is faster than that of the front crawl due to the synchronous pull/push with both arms and legs, which is done quickly. Yet since speed drops significantly during the recovery phase, it is overall slightly slower than front crawl, especially over longer distances. Brigitte Becue
Brigitte Becue (born 18 September 1972 in Ostend) is a retired breaststroke and medley swimmer from Belgium, who competed for her native country at four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988. In 1989, she won the silver medal in the women's 200 metres breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Bonn, West Germany. Becue reached her highest peak at the 1995 European Aquatics Championships in Vienna, where she won three medals (two gold, one silver). She twice was named Belgian Sportswoman of the Year (1994 and 1995). Becue finished 10th overall in the 2007 Dakar Rally The 2007 Dakar Rally was the 29th running of the event. Nina Van Koeckhoven
Nina van Koeckhoven (born 6 October 1983) is a Belgian freestyle swimmer and triathlete. She won two medals at the 2000 European Aquatics Championships and participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in four events, but did not reach the finals. Van Koeckhoven was born in Ghent but later moved to Zelzate. In 1991, she started swimming in a club. Her first international success was a bronze medal in the 200 m freestyle at the 1997 European Youth Olympic Festival in Lisbon. Next year she won two more bronze medals, in the 100 m and 200 m freestyle at the European Junior Swimming Championships. From 1999 she competed in regular competitions and reached the finals at the 1999 European Aquatics Championships, again in the 200 m freestyle. Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions.
