Faadhippolhu Atoll
Faadhippolhu Atoll (code name Lhaviyani) is an administrative division of the Maldives. It corresponds to the natural atoll of the same name. There is an industrial island with tuna canning facilities located at Felivaru. Some islands on this atoll like Hinnavaru and Naifaru are overpopulated, being completely covered by buildings. The formerly uninhabited island of Maafilaafushi was resettled in the 1980s in order to relieve the lack of land availability in Malé. Traditionally, Maldivians call this atoll simply 'Faadhippolhu', without adding the word 'Atholhu' at the end. This is done only with the names of some atolls. Naifaru (Lhaviyani Atoll)
Naifaru is an island in the Maldives north of the capital, Malé. It is the capital and most populous island of Lhaviyani Atoll. History According to local historian late Ali Hussain, Naifaru has been inhabited for more than 400 years. He concluded this based on some evidences he observed. among these are: # lack of evidence of Naifaru being a big town historically, like the abandoned cemeteries, foundations and rocky mounds of the buried stupas from the Buddhist era like of which we find in some other islands of the atoll like Maafilaafushi, Dhiffushimaidhoo. Hinnavaru (Lhaviyani Atoll)
Hinnavaru (Dhivehi: ހިންނަވަރު) is one of the inhabited islands of Lhaviyani Atoll. The island has a population of more than 5,000 people. Geography The island is north of the country's capital, Malé. Reclamation Land reclamation in Hinnavaru has caused drastic change. From 2010, a reclamation project was carried out by Boskalis, with the island gaining of land. Demography The registered population as of June 2012 was 4,676 (2,404 male and 2,272 female). There are around 715 houses registered, but people live in only around 480 houses. As per the census of 2006, Hinnavaru had a population of 3,017 (1,358 male and 1,359 female). The island had a literacy rate of 96.48%. The population of the Island had declined by 1.04% when compared to the 2000 census. By the census of 2014, the number had declined to 2,449. Atolls Of The Maldives
The Maldives are formed by 20 natural atolls, along with a few islands and isolated reefs today which form a pattern stretching from 7 degrees 10′ North to 0 degrees 45′ South. The largest of these atolls is Boduthiladhunmathi, while the atoll containing the most islands is Huvadhu. Some atolls are in the form of a number of islands by time and in the form of isolated reefs, which could be classified as smaller atoll formations. All land above the surface in the Maldives is of coralline origin. The atolls of the Maldives form a quite regular chain and, especially in the northern and central atolls, an arrayed structure is apparent. There are broad and deep channels in between some atolls. The origin of the word "atoll" itself is in the language of the Maldives. "Atoll" (from dv, script=Latn, atholhu) is now used in many languages worldwide.
