FLN Football Team
The FLN football team (in ar, فريق جبهة التحرير الوطني لكرة القدم, in french: Équipe du FLN de football), also known as ''Le onze de l'indépendance'' ( en, The eleven of the Independence) was a team made up mainly of professional players in France, who then joined the Algerian independence movement of the National Liberation Front (FLN), and assisted in organizing football matches against national football teams. The FLN linked African football to anti-colonial resistance using the idea of Pan-Africanism as a legitimizing tool and symbol of national identity. History The team was founded on 13 April 1958 during the war of independence against France. The role of this team was primarily psychological, in order to show the French metropolitans that even professional footballers were involved in the cause, even to the extent of renouncing their status. Two attempts to take off from the Munich-Riem airport are aborted, with a third attempted at 3:04pm on Flight BE609, a British European Airways "Elizabethan" class Airspeed Ambassador charter aircraft G-ALZU 'Lord Burghley'. On take off, the aeroplane, carrying players and backroom staff of Manchester United F.C., plus a number of British journalists and supporters, crashed in a blizzard. Mustapha Zitouni (19 October 1928 – 5 January 2014) was a professional footballer who played as a defender. He played international football for both France and Algeria. Career Born in Algiers, French Algeria, Zitouni began his career with OM Saint-Eugène. He then played in France for Cannes, Monaco and Chartres. While in France he represented the French national side. He was also part of France's squad at the 1952 Summer Olympics, but he did not play in any matches. He left his professional career in France in 1958 to represent the unofficial Algerian national side, which was then run by the National Liberation Front, a rebel group campaigning for Algerian independence. Hadj Habib Derbouz Draoua ( ar, حاج حبيب دربوز دراوة ; 1914 – ), commonly known as Habib Draoua and also called Hadj Draoua was a professional Algerian footballer who played as a midfielder. He was also a manager. Life and career Habib Draoua was born in Mdina Jdida in the city of Oran in 1914. Very young, he joined USM Oran which was then the greatest Algerian Muslim club, where he did all his youth classes. He played his first senior match at the age of 20 in 1934. In 1937 he joined Le Havre AC, he remained in France until 1945 and the end of the Second World War. In 1945, he joined Tunisia as a coach-player at ES Tunis before being transferred to the CS Hammam Lif where he won two Tunisian Cups in 1951 and 1954. He stopped his football career in 1950, after winning two Tunisian championship titles in 1957 and in 1960 with the Stade Tunisien.
