Zagatala ( az, Zaqatala; av, Zakatala) is a city in northwestern Azerbaijan and the administrative center of the Zagatala District. It has a municipal population of 31,300 inhabitants and is located on the Tala River. The municipality consists of the city of Zagatala and the nearby village of Qazangül. The Azerbaijan First Division ( az, Azərbaycan Birinci Divizionu) is the second highest professional division in Azerbaijani professional football (soccer), football. The division is run by Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan, AFFA. No teams are promoted to Azerbaijan Premier League, Premier Division. History Due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, all Azerbaijan clubs of the former Soviet Top League, Soviet Premier Division and Soviet First League, Soviet First Division conformed a single Azerbaijan Premier League, which meant that the new second tier of Azerbaijan football would remain regionalized. For the first two seasons three regional groups conformed the second tier, until in 1994 the single table in use today began to be used. Competition format The First Division currently consists of 14 teams. All teams play each other two times. Media coverage CBC Sport currently own all the rights to broadcast the season's games on terrestrial TV.

In its original form, it started in 1936, when Azerbaijan was a republic of the Soviet Union and it was not disputed by Azerbaijani teams in the Soviet league pyramid. The 2017–18 Azerbaijan First Division is the second-level of football in Azerbaijan. Turan Tovuz were the defending champions. Teams Sabail was promoted from the 2016–17 season to Azerbaijan Premier League, while Shuvalan relegated to the First Division. On 25 September 2017, it was announced that Bine, Khazar Baku, and Sabah will participate in the First Division.
