FC Winnipeg Lions
The FC Winnipeg Lions (formerly known as Sons of Italy Lions Soccer Club), formed in 1995, is a Canadian soccer club that competes in the Manitoba Major Soccer League. History Founded in 1995 as Sons of Italy Lions, the club officially changed their name in 2012. The Lions have won numerous league titles, trophies and cup tournaments. Since 2002 they have captured the Manitoba top division title twelve times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) The club has represented Manitoba at The Challenge Trophy on a number of occasions, including winning the Gold medal at the 2002 championship by defeating St. Lawrence Laurentians 1–0. Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex
The Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex, originally known as the Winnipeg Soccer Complex, is a multi-use stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is currently used mostly for soccer matches. The main pitch, John Scouras Field, holds 2,000 spectators. The complex replaced Alexander Park as the main soccer venue in Winnipeg. Tony Nocita
Tony Nocita (born 9 November 1963 in Winnipeg) is a former professional Canadian soccer player who currently plays for Sons of Italy Lions SC. He has been inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. The Winnipeg Fury's 1992 Mita Cup winning team will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Club career Nocita played for the Winnipeg Fury of the Canadian Soccer League beginning in 1987, and was a member of the 1992 Championship team. He served as the team captain for the Fury in 1993 during the team's run in the Canadian National Soccer League. In 1994, he played in the American Professional Soccer League with the Toronto Rockets. International career Nicknamed ''Chita'', he made his debut for Canada in an October 1987 friendly match against Honduras. He went on to earn 8 caps, all friendlies, scoring no goals. Manitoba Major Soccer League
The Manitoba Major Soccer League is an adult soccer system based in Manitoba, Canada. MMSL league are both indoor and outdoor. It is sanctioned by the Manitoba Soccer Association, a branch of the Canadian Soccer Association. The highest level of amateur soccer in the province of Manitoba is the MMSL Premier Division. Winners of the MSA Cup are eligible to represent the province and compete for the Challenge Trophy, the highest national amateur cup competition in Canada sanctioned by the CSA. Players come with a variety of playing backgrounds, including high school, college, university, academies, semi-professional, and ex-professionals. The Challenge Trophy
The Challenge Trophy (french: Trophée Challenge) is a national amateur soccer cup in Canada contested by the champions of individual provincial soccer competitions. It is one of the oldest soccer competitions in Canada, being held since 1913. It is run by the Canadian Soccer Association. History An unofficial Dominion championship for a trophy donated by The People newspaper of London, named the Peoples Shield, was contested from 1906–1912. Teams from all provinces did not enter the competition in each year, and it was contested by Western Canada in its last years.
