F. W. Schuerenberg House
The F.W. Schuerenberg House is located in Brenham, Texas and was built in 1895 by Frederick William Schuerenberg. Schuerenberg, the son of an early German immigrant, was a local businessman who owned a blacksmith shop in Brenham. The mansion is located at 503 West Alamo street and is considered a classic example of Victorian architecture. The Mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It sat vacant from 2005 to early 2016, when it was then purchased by a married couple from Houston who plan to restore it. It is said to be haunted by the spirit of a small girl who occasionally peers out the first floor bay window. it is also rumored that someone committed suicide by hanging themselves in the nursery located on the second floor. The old carriage house is located at the back of the lot on Peabody street. Its architectural style closely resembles that of the Wood-Hughes House which is also located in Brenham, Texas. Brenham ( ) is a city in east-central Texas in Washington County, United States, with a population of 17,369 according to the 2020 U.S. census. It is the county seat of Washington County. Washington County is known as the "Birthplace of Texas," as it contains the site of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836 in the town of Washington-on-the-Brazos. This is now a state historic site. Brenham is also known for its annual German heritage festival that takes place each May called Maifest, similar to Volksfest. The Eastlake movement was a nineteenth-century architectural and household design reform movement started by British architect and writer Charles Eastlake (1836–1906). The movement is generally considered part of the late Victorian period in terms of broad antique furniture designations. In architecture the Eastlake style or Eastlake architecture is part of the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture. Eastlake's book ''Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details'' posited that furniture and decor in people's homes should be made by hand or machine workers who took personal pride in their work. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there).
