F. P. Holland
Franklin Pierce Holland (September 22, 1852 – January 18, 1928), was a publisher and the mayor of Dallas in 1895–1897. Early life Franklin Pierce Holland was born on September 22, 1852, in Galveston, Texas. His parents were Dr. Gustavus Holland, a native of Stuttgart, Wurtemberg, Germany and Evelyn Compton of Louisiana. Following his schooling at Redding, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Holland returned to Texas and found work as a sewing machine and farm implement salesman in Austin, Texas. He began working for Texas Siftings as an editor. Later, he started Texas Farm and Ranch Magazine and served as its editor and publisher. He was involved in the establishment Dallas State Fair (forerunner to the State Fair of Texas), serving as the first general manager of the fair. Mayor of Dallas Franklin P. ''Holland's Magazine'' (originally known as ''Street's Weekly'', also known as ''Holland's: The Magazine of the South'') was a magazine published from 1876 to 1953. It was a women's magazine that published recipes, fashion tips, gardening tips, sewing patterns, non-fiction, and short fiction. It was known for being a vehicle for social change and was influential in securing the passage of the Texas Pure Food law. ''Street's Weekly'' From its founding in 1876 until its 23rd volume in 1905 the magazine was ''Street's Weekly'' and published weekly. Beginning with its 24th volume in 1905 it published monthly under a new name. ''Holland's Magazine'' In 1905 F. P. Holland changed the name of ''Street's Weekly'' to ''Holland's Magazine'' and moved its headquarters to Dallas, Texas. Oakland Cemetery (Dallas, Texas)
The Oakland Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Dallas, Texas, United States. It originally stood on 180 acres in rural Dallas County 1.5 miles southeast of the county court house when it opened in 1892. Economic problems, court judgements, land sales and acquisitions altered the cemetery to approximately 48 acres by 1969. About 27,000 people have selected Oakland Cemetery as the burial location for themselves and/or their family members. Burials include many prominent politicians, educators, physicians, ministers, business leaders, military service members, ancestors of famous individuals and ordinary citizens.
