Exponential Mechanism (differential Privacy)
The exponential mechanism is a technique for designing differentially private algorithms. It was developed by Frank McSherry and Kunal Talwar in 2007. Their work was recognized as a co-winner of the 2009 PET Award for Outstanding Research in Privacy Enhancing Technologies. Most of the initial research in the field of differential privacy revolved around real-valued functions which have relatively low sensitivity to change in the data of a single individual and whose usefulness is not hampered by small additive perturbations. A natural question is what happens in the situation when one wants to preserve more general sets of properties. The exponential mechanism helps to extend the notion of differential privacy to address these issues. Frank McSherry
Frank McSherry is a computer scientist. McSherry's areas of research include distributed computing and information privacy. McSherry is known, along with Cynthia Dwork, Adam D. Smith, and Kobbi Nissim, as one of the co-inventors of differential privacy, for which he won the 2017 Gödel Prize. Along with Kunal Talwar, he is the co-creator of the exponential mechanism for differential privacy, for which they won the 2009 PET Award for Outstanding Research in Privacy Enhancing Technologies. Differential Privacy
Differential privacy (DP) is a system for publicly sharing information about a dataset by describing the patterns of groups within the dataset while withholding information about individuals in the dataset. The idea behind differential privacy is that if the effect of making an arbitrary single substitution in the database is small enough, the query result cannot be used to infer much about any single individual, and therefore provides privacy. Another way to describe differential privacy is as a constraint on the algorithms used to publish aggregate information about a statistical database which limits the disclosure of private information of records whose information is in the database. In mathematics, the concept of a measure is a generalization and formalization of geometrical measures ( length, area, volume) and other common notions, such as mass and probability of events. These seemingly distinct concepts have many similarities and can often be treated together in a single mathematical context. Measures are foundational in probability theory, integration theory, and can be generalized to assume negative values, as with electrical charge. Avrim Blum
Avrim Blum (born 27 May 1966) is a computer scientist. In 2007, he was made a List of Fellows of the Association for Computing Machinery, Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery "for contributions to learning theory and algorithms." Blum attended MIT, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in 1991 under professor Ron Rivest. He was a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University from 1991 to 2017. In 2017, he joined Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago as professor and chief academic officer. His main work has been in the area of theoretical computer science, with particular activity in the fields of machine learning, computational learning theory, algorithmic game theory, database privacy, and algorithms. Katrina Ligett
Katrina Ligett is an American computer scientist. She is a Professor of computer science at the Hebrew University and Visiting Associate at California Institute of Technology. She is known for work on algorithmic game theory and privacy. Education Ligett studied at Brown University, where she completed her BS degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2004. She then earned her MS and PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Her PhD was supervised by Avrim Blum. Aaron Roth is an American computer scientist. He is the Henry Salvatori Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Biography Roth is the son of Alvin E. Roth, a former Harvard University professor who won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2012. Uniform convergence in probability is a form of convergence in probability in statistical asymptotic theory and probability theory. It means that, under certain conditions, the ''empirical frequencies'' of all events in a certain event-family converge to their ''theoretical probabilities''. In statistics, classification is the problem of identifying which of a set of categories (sub-populations) an observation (or observations) belongs to.
