V2 Records (or V2 Music; V2 being an abbreviation for Virgin 2) is a record label that was purchased by Universal Music Group in 2007 and sold to IASin 2013. In the Benelux, V2 operates separately from PIAS, as the label bought itself out from Universal in 2007. History The label was founded in 1996 by Richard Branson, five years after he sold Virgin Records to EMI. V2 management was led by the same individuals that built Branson's renowned balloon and the control position was held by a Canadian public corporation. The company was restructured after running into financial difficulties with Branson taking control and reinventing the brand. The label was owned 95% by Morgan Stanley, the chief financier of the company, and 5% by Branson. Over the years V2 acquired Gee Street Records, Junior Boy's Own, Blue Dog Records, and Big Cat Records. Fixkes
Fixkes is a Belgian band from Stabroek, near Antwerp. The band mixes acoustic pop and rap in their music. In February 2007, they released their first official single, "Kvraagetaan". The single was a big success in Belgium and reached number 1 in the Belgian Ultratop chart. Band history In November 2005 Fixkes was formed by Sam and Jan Valkenborgh. The name Fixkes is a nickname that Sam got in his teens. Jan plays the drums, Sam sings and plays guitar, he is also the songwriter of the group. The rest of the band's line-up was: Peter Deckers (guitar, harmonica), Johan Pauwels (bassguitar) and Bart Palmers (piano). In January 2007, the band was picked up by the Dutch Excelsior Recordings. Fixkes released their first single only one month later, in February 2007. Spinvis
Spinvis is a Dutch one-man music project centred on Erik de Jong (born 2 February 1961, Spijkenisse). Using experimental, lo-fi music, Spinvis has earned two gold records in the Netherlands, and performed sold-out tours in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Biography ''Spinvis'' In 2001, Erik de Jong, or Spinvis, at the age of 40, sent a three-song demo to the Dutch indie label, Excelsior Recordings. Within two weeks, a record deal was signed. The label decided to keep the songs that had been recorded by Spinvis on his home computer. With some minor mixing touch-ups these songs comprised Spinvis' first album, released in the Netherlands on 1 April 2002. The music press responded with positive reviews and the album reached number one in ''Oor'' magazine's Moordlijst, an alternative chart in the Netherlands. Solo (band)
Solo is the musical outfit of Dutch musicians Michiel Flamman and Simon Gitsels. The duo released two albums, of which the latest ''Solopeople'' was the biggest success. The album released on label Excelsior Recordings spawned a Dutch top 20 hit with ''Come Back To Me''. Biography Songs ’n Sounds (2003–2005) In 2003 Flamman and Gitsels team up under the name Solo. By then both have already paid their dues in the music industry. Flamman performed under the name J. Perkin and wrote songs for other artists. Gitsels worked as sessions musician for Mathilde Santing and Birgit. A year later the duo signs with Excelsior Recordings. Roosbeef
Roosbeef is a Dutch band from Duiven around singer-songwriter Roos Rebergen. They are acclaimed for their original lyrics and musical style. Rebergen describes their style as melodic pop music with a raw edge. The band won the Grote Prijs van Nederland in the category singer-songwriter in 2005. A self-titled EP was released in 2007. Moss (band)
Moss was a three-piece English doom metal band that formed in 2001. Influenced by H. P. Lovecraft and the occult, songs usually average the 20 minute mark and incorporate dense and otherworldly atmospheres. Despite the use of extreme bass frequencies, Moss features no bass guitarist. Meindert Talma & The Negroes
Meindert Talma (born 2 November 1968 in Surhuisterveen) is a Dutch lo-fi singer and keyboardist whose backing band goes by the name of "the Negroes." He sings in Dutch as well as Frisian and English and has released seven albums . Musical career In 1995, friends of Meindert Talma pressed some of his home recordings on a single as a birthday gift. Unexpectedly the record was a hit and Talma became popular in the alternative music scene in Groningen. Two years later, Talma and a group of friends (the Negroes) recorded a debut album, ''Hondert punten'' ("Hundred points"). LPG is a Dutch indie-pop band, signed on Excelsior Recordings/V2 Records. In April 2005, their critically acclaimed debut album ''I fear no foe'' was released in the Netherlands, receiving positive reviews from established magazines and websites, such as Oor, VPRO 3voor12 and Volkskrant. There were few negative reviews, which mostly struggled with the applause in the opening track ''Speech'', and the diversity of the band. Shortlty after releasing the debut album, the band released a homemade music video to the song ''Sparrow'', which consisted out of more than 1500 separate photos, resulting in an artistic animation. Johan (band)
Johan is a Dutch band fronted by singer/guitarist Jacco de Greeuw. Their music has been primarily influenced by bands such as The Beatles, Crowded House, and The Byrds. Biography Jacco de Greeuw founded Thank God For Us in the late eighties, after having played in several other bands. The band was renamed Little Mary Big when joined by Marike Groot. The Herb Spectacles
The Herb Spectacles were a Dutch mariachi band formed in the Netherlands in 1999. The group was inspired by the likes of Chet Baker’s mariachi recordings and Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass. Biography The Herb Spectacles formed in late 1999, when Marcel Kruup and Maarten Heijblok (both ex-Treble Spankers) teamed up with members from Amsterdam's Klezmerband and added a marimba player and percussionist.
