Ewen Thompson
Ewen Paul Thompson (born 17 December 1979) is a former New Zealand international cricketer who played in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 1998. Thompson has also played for Northland and Manawatu in the Hawke Cup. He was born in Warkworth. Thompson was called up to the New Zealand squad at the age of 29 for the two Twenty20 Internationals against the West Indies in December 2008. Warkworth (Māori: ''Mahurangi'') is a town on the Northland Peninsula in the upper North Island of New Zealand. It is in the northern part of the Auckland Region. It is located on State Highway 1, north of Auckland and south of Whangārei, and is at the head of Mahurangi Harbour. The Warkworth district is known as the ''Kowhai Coast'', named after the native kōwhai tree, and the town's annual Kowhai Festival is one of the largest community festivals in the country, running for around a week in spring. The Manawatu cricket team represents the Manawatū district of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. History Cricket was played in the region in the 1870s. The Palmerston Cricket Club was formed in October 1878. The Manawatu Cricket Association was formed in 1895, made up of six clubs: Feilding, Palmerston North, Colyton, Carnarvon, Cheltenham and Birmingham. Manawatu played in the very first match in the Hawke Cup, when they defeated Wairarapa in December 1910, thanks largely to the bowling of Arthur Ongley, who took 12 wickets. Seddon Park
Seddon Park is a cricket ground in Hamilton, New Zealand. It is the fourth-largest cricket ground in the country, and is renowned for its "village green" setting, affording a picnic atmosphere for spectators. History Seddon Park was named after Richard Seddon, the longest-serving Prime Minister of New Zealand. Hamilton Borough Council named it in July 1906 before it was developed. It was first used for a major cricket match in February 1914, when the touring Australians played a South Auckland XVIII in a two-day match. It has been in constant use since. The Hawke Cup is a non-first-class cricket competition for New Zealand's district associations. Apart from 1910–11, 1912–13 and 2000–01 the competition has always been on a challenge basis. To win the Hawke Cup, the challengers must beat the holders, either outright or on the first innings in a drawn match, on the holders' home ground. Teams from New Zealand's four main centres, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, have not usually competed for the Hawke Cup, although they did participate in the latter half of the 1990s. They were excluded again from the 2000–01 season. From 2000 to 2010 the team from Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth-largest urban area, was the most successful. History The first mention of cricket in the history of New Zealand is from Northland: a game on the beach at Paihia, in the Bay of Islands, in December 1832.
