Eustace Robert Hayles
Robert Hayles (1843 in London – 1926 in Arcadia) was an Australian entrepreneur who formed a series of passenger and cargo ferry services in the north of Australia after 1889. He moved to Australia aboard the sailing ship ''Nunda'' in 1861. Hayles worked in the mining and pastoral industries in Queensland before 1889 when he purchased a number of buildings and some land in Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, Queensland, Australia. Hayles established a permanent tourist operation on Magnetic Island and in 1900 built the Picnic Bay Jetty, establishing a permanent passenger ferry service to Magnetic Island. Hayles's first ferry, the ''Bee'', was wrecked during a storm in 1901 and Hayles commissioned the construction of a 22-passenger ferry, the ''Phoenix'' and later commissioned a similar ferry called the ''Magnet''. Picnic Bay (formerly Camoomilli) is a town and suburb of Magnetic Island in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , Picnic Bay had a population of 291 people. Magnetic Island
Magnetic Island ( Wulguru: Yunbenun) is an island offshore from the city of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. This mountainous island in Cleveland Bay has effectively become a suburb of Townsville, with 2,335 permanent residents. The island is accessible from Townsville Breakwater to Nelly Bay Harbour by ferry. There is a large National Park and bird sanctuary and walking tracks can be taken between the populated bays and to a number of tourist destinations such as the World War II forts. The island is a holiday destination with many hotels and several resorts in operation to cater for all levels of service. The public facilities and infrastructure on the island are managed by the Townsville City Council. Picnic Bay Jetty
Picnic Bay Jetty is a heritage-listed jetty at Esplanade, Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1959 to 1977. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 April 2004. History The Picnic Bay Jetty appears to be the third jetty constructed on the site. A permit to construct the facility was issued in 1957 and the structure was completed about mid October 1959. The present jetty was constructed under a permit issued by the Queensland Department of Harbours and Marine. It was built using Federal funds and leased to Magnetic Island company Hayles Magnetic Pty Ltd. The company was associated with tourist ventures on Magnetic Island from 1898 and leased the present jetty from 1960 until 1981.
