Eurythenes Obesus
''Eurythenes obesus'' is a species of amphipod of the genus ''Eurythenes''. It was first described in 1905 by Édouard Chevreux. ''Eurythenes obesus'' is found most from the Caribbean to the Antarctic regions but can be found in most ocean basins. It can grow to over long and looks similar to ''Eurythenes gryllus ''Eurythenes gryllus'' is a relatively large species of amphipod found worldwide in cold, deep oceans. Édouard Chevreux
Édouard Chevreux (10 November 1846, in Paris – 10 January 1931, in Bône) was a French carcinologist. Chevreux specialised in the study of Amphipoda, an order of malacostracan crustaceans. With Jean-Louis Fage (1883–1964), he was co-author of the section on "Amphipodes" in the ''Faune de France''. The genera '' Chevreuxius'' and '' Chevreuxiella'' are named after him, as are numerous crustacean species. Selected writings * ''Sur le Gammarus berilloni catta'' * ''Voyage de la goëlette "Melita" aux Canaries et au Sénégal, 1889–1890'', (1891) – Voyage of the schooner "Melita" to the Canary Islands and Senegal, 1889–1890. * ''Amphipodes provenant des campagnes de l'Hirondelle (1885–1888)'', (1900) – Amphipods from the campaigns of the "Hirondelle" (1885–1888). * ''Paracyphocaris praedator; type d'un nouveau genre de Lysianassidae'', (1905) – "''Paracyphocaris praedator''"; the type of a new genus of Lysianassidae. * ''Amphipodes'', (1906) – Amphipods ...

Amphipod
Amphipoda is an order of malacostracan crustaceans with no carapace and generally with laterally compressed bodies. Amphipods range in size from and are mostly detritivores or scavengers. There are more than 9,900 amphipod species so far described. They are mostly marine animals, but are found in almost all aquatic environments. Some 1,900 species live in fresh water, and the order also includes the terrestrial sandhoppers such as ''Talitrus saltator''. Etymology and names The name ''Amphipoda'' comes, via New Latin ', from the Greek roots 'on both/all sides' and 'foot'. This contrasts with the related Isopoda, which have a single kind of thoracic leg. Particularly among anglers, amphipods are known as ''freshwater shrimp'', ''scuds'', or ''sideswimmers''. Description Anatomy The body of an amphipod is divided into 13 segments, which can be grouped into a head, a thorax and an abdomen. The head is fused to the thorax, and bears two pairs of antennae and one pair of se ...

World Register Of Marine Species
The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is a taxonomic database that aims to provide an authoritative and comprehensive list of names of marine organisms. Content The content of the registry is edited and maintained by scientific specialists on each group of organism. These taxonomists control the quality of the information, which is gathered from the primary scientific literature as well as from some external regional and taxon-specific databases. WoRMS maintains valid names of all marine organisms, but also provides information on synonyms and invalid names. It is an ongoing task to maintain the registry, since new species are constantly being discovered and described by scientists; in addition, the nomenclature and taxonomy of existing species is often corrected or changed as new research is constantly being published. Subsets of WoRMS content are made available, and can have separate badging and their own home/launch pages, as "subregisters", such as the ''World List of ...

The Caribbean
The Caribbean (, ) ( es, El Caribe; french: la Caraïbe; ht, Karayib; nl, De Caraïben) is a region of the Americas that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean) and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region has more than 700 islands, islets, reefs and cays (see the list of Caribbean islands). Island arcs delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea: The Greater Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago on the north and the Lesser Antilles and the on the south and east (which includes the Leeward Antilles). They form the West Indies with the nearby Lucayan Archipelago (the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands), which are considered to be part of the Caribbean despite not bordering the Caribbe ...

Antarctic
The Antarctic ( or , American English also or ; commonly ) is a polar region around Earth's South Pole, opposite the Arctic region around the North Pole. The Antarctic comprises the continent of Antarctica, the Kerguelen Plateau and other island territories located on the Antarctic Plate or south of the Antarctic Convergence. The Antarctic region includes the ice shelves, waters, and all the island territories in the Southern Ocean situated south of the Antarctic Convergence, a zone approximately wide varying in latitude seasonally. The region covers some 20 percent of the Southern Hemisphere, of which 5.5 percent (14 million km2) is the surface area of the Antarctica continent itself. All of the land and ice shelves south of 60°S latitude are administered under the Antarctic Treaty System. Biogeographically, the Antarctic realm is one of eight biogeographic realms of Earth's land surface. Geography As defined by the Antarctic Treaty System, the Antarctic r ...

Ocean Basin
In hydrology, an oceanic basin (or ocean basin) is anywhere on Earth that is covered by seawater. Geologically, ocean basins are large  geologic basins that are below sea level. Most commonly the ocean is divided into basins following the continents distribution: the North and South Atlantic (together approximately 75 million km2/ 29 million mi2), North and South Pacific (together approximately 155 million km2/ 59 million mi2), Indian Ocean (68 million km2/ 26 million mi2) and Arctic Ocean (14 million km2/ 5.4 million mi2). Also recognized is the Southern Ocean (20 million km2/ 7 million mi2). All ocean basins collectively cover 71% of the Earth's surface, and together they contain almost 97% of all water on the planet. They have an average depth of almost 4 km (about 2.5 miles). Definitions of boundaries Boundaries based on continents ''"Limits of Oceans and Seas"'',International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), (1953): Limits of Oceans and Seas, Internat ...

Eurythenes Gryllus
''Eurythenes gryllus'' is a relatively large species of amphipod found worldwide in cold, deep oceans. This widespread and often common species is benthic and lives at depths of . It is a predator and scavenger that is fast-swimming and has a highly developed long-range chemoreceptive tracking ability, allowing large numbers to rapidly congregate at carcasses that reach the bottom. Description and taxonomy It was first described in 1822 by M. W. Mandt as ''Gammarus ''Gammarus'' is an amphipod crustacean genus in the family Gammaridae. ''Eurythenes gryllus'' can grow to long and is red, brown or pale in colour with white eyes. Those of relatively shallow waters only reach about half the length of those found at the largest depths. There are also other morphological differences and ge ...
