European Rugby League
The European Rugby League (ERL) is the umbrella body for nations playing the sport of rugby league football across Europe. In the absence of other continental federations, ERL also controls rugby league in North America (including Central America), the Middle East and Africa. History 2003-2019 The federation was founded January 2003 following an initiative between Richard Lewis, Executive Chairman of Britain's Rugby Football League (RFL) and his French counterpart Jean Paul Ferre. The RLEF's first constitution was approved in January 2004 and the federation's first Board of Directors was elected. This first Board of Directors consisted of Jean Paul Ferre as President/Chairman and Richard Lewis as Deputy Chairman with Nigel Wood and Nicolas Larrat being the other Board members. Manchester () is a city in Greater Manchester, England. It had a population of 552,000 in 2021. Rugby League European Cup
The Rugby League European Championship (formerly known as the European Cup and European Nations Cup) is a rugby league football tournament for European national teams that was first held in 1935. Originally, the European Cup had three teams, with England, Wales and France each playing each other once. Unlike the Tri-Nations series, there was no final; the team finishing at the top of the group was deemed the winner. From 1949 to 1956, a fourth Other Nationalities team entered the European Cup. Rugby League Ireland
Rugby League Ireland (RLI) is the internationally recognised governing body for the development of rugby league football in Ireland, having secured official recognition from the RLIF in 2000. It is recognised within the Irish Sports Council and took over the running of the Irish international team entirely in 2008 for the World Cup. History Modern-day rugby league in Ireland began in 1989 when Brian Corrigan founded the Dublin Blues Rugby League, consisting mostly of rugby union players who wanted to stay fit over the summer. Fédération Française De Rugby à XIII
The French Rugby League Federation (french: Fédération Française de Rugby à XIII (FFR)) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league football in France. The Federation was formed during 1934 and since then has organised and governed the French rugby league championship, the Lord Derby Cup and all of the clubs that are contained within those organisations. The FFR also controls the France national rugby league team organizing fixtures that they compete in, they also have a major voting position in the Rugby League International Federation where they help organise many aspects of rugby league worldwide. Maurice Watkins (solicitor)
Edward Maurice Watkins CBE (30 November 1941 – 16 August 2021) was a British solicitor and sports administrator best known as being a long-time director and the club solicitor of Manchester United. He had represented high-profile clients in criminal trials including Eric Cantona and Stuart Hall. After leaving Manchester United, he served in multiple other sports administration roles including as chairman of British Swimming, overseeing the team's successful Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycles. He was joint senior partner of Brabners LLP solicitors in Manchester. Personal life Watkins was educated at Manchester Grammar School and University College London. Watkins died on 16 August 2021, at the age of 79, after suffering from prostate cancer. Nordic Cup (rugby League)
The Nordic Cup is a rugby league tournament played annually between Denmark national rugby league team, Norway and Sweden. It was first played in 2011, in which Denmark claimed the trophy with victory over Norway at Gladsaxe Stadium in Greater Copenhagen. For the first three years, the tournament was acknowledged by the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF), but the games were not recognised as full internationals. In 2014, the fixtures were played in accordance with RLEF regulations and recognised as full internationals. Balkans Cup (rugby League)
The Balkans Cup was an international football competition for clubs from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. It was introduced in 1961 and was very popular in the 1960s (the 1967 final attracted 42,000 spectators), being the second most important international club competition for clubs from the region (after the European Champions' Cup in which the champions could play; the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup originally attracted few teams from the region as many did not organise domestic cups regularly and only Yugoslavia had significant representation in the Fairs Cup). The competition has been dominated by Bulgaria-based teams. The Bulgarian teams have won together a total number of 9 titles.
