European Lacrosse Federation
European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) is the sport governing body of men and women's lacrosse in Europe. It was founded in 1995 by the Czech Republic, Scotland, England, Sweden, Germany, and Wales. There are currently 34 member nations. Overview The ELF sponsors the European Lacrosse Championships for national teams in both men’s and women's lacrosse. The annual Aleš Hřebeský Memorial tournament in Prague is the largest European box lacrosse tournament. The main club field lacrosse competition is the Ken Galluccio Cup, where the winner of each country’s league competes to decide the European club champion. The ELF is an affiliate member of the lacrosse world governing body, World Lacrosse. 21 ELF members are full members of the WL, which is the majority of all full members. Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. It is the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins with the indigenous people of North America as early as the 12th century. The game was extensively modified by European colonists, reducing the violence, to create its current collegiate and professional form. Players use the head of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the goal. The sport has four versions that have different sticks, fields, rules and equipment: field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse. The men's games, field lacrosse (outdoor) and box lacrosse (indoor), are contact sports and all players wear protective gear: helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, and elbow pads. Ken Galluccio Cup
The Ken Galluccio Cup is the European field lacrosse championship club competition. Organised by the European Lacrosse Federation, it is contested by the champions from European lacrosse leagues. History The idea of the competition was conceived by Kenneth Galluccio, one of the first ambassadors of lacrosse in Germany. The first edition, played in 2008 in Hamburg, Germany, was contested by five clubs. English team Wilmslow Lacrosse Club claimed the title. After the death of Galluccio in February 2009 the tournament was suspended for a year. The tournament returned in 2010 renaming the championship in his honour. Aleš Hřebeský Memorial
The Aleš Hřebeský Memorial is held by Lacrosse Club Custodes Sokol Radotín to honor its former player who died in the autumn of 1993. Today the Aleš Hřebeský Memorial is the most prestigious box lacrosse event in Europe with teams from 15 countries participating. Aleš Hřebeský Aleš Hřebeský was born on July 1, 1972, and was among the most gifted LCC players. Moreover, he was a keen ice hockey player, gymnast, and cycle-ball player. On November 30, 1993, he died of the injuries caused by a drunk driver who hit Aleš while he was waiting at a bus stop. History The tournament used to be the traditional opening of the Czech lacrosse season at the end of March. All teams played on a usually muddy field dried with layers of shavings and sawdust. Women's Lacrosse
Women's lacrosse (or girls' lacrosse), sometimes shortened to lax, is a sport with twelve players on the field at a time (including the goalkeeper). Originally played by indigenous peoples of the Americas, the modern women's game was introduced in 1890 at the St Leonard's School in St Andrews, Scotland. The rules of women's lacrosse differ significantly from field lacrosse, men's field lacrosse. The two are often considered to be different sports with a common root. The object of the game is to use a long-handled stick (known as a ''crosse'' or lacrosse stick) to catch, cradle, and pass a solid rubber lacrosse ball in an effort to score by hurling the ball into an opponent's goal. Field lacrosse is a full contact sport, full contact outdoor men's sport played with ten players on each team. The sport originated among indigenous peoples of the Americas, Native Americans, and the modern rules of field lacrosse were initially codified by Canadian William George Beers in 1867. Field lacrosse is one of three major versions of lacrosse played internationally. The Welsh Lacrosse Association (WLA) is the governing body for lacrosse in Wales. It was recognized by the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations in 1972, the first year of the IFWLA. It is one of 34 full members of the Federation of International Lacrosse, the current international governing body for men's and women's lacrosse. World Lacrosse
World Lacrosse (WL), formerly the Federation of International Lacrosse, is the international governing body of lacrosse, responsible for the men's, women's, and indoor versions of the sport. It was established in 2008 by the merger of the previously separate men's and women's international lacrosse associations. Its headquarters are in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. Lacrosse Scotland is the sport governing body, national governing body of lacrosse in Scotland. Previously known as the Scottish Lacrosse Association (SLA), name changed upon incorporation in 2005.
