European Community Shipowners' Associations
The European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) is the voice of the European shipping industry. Founded in 1965 under the name ''Comité des Associations d'Armateurs des Communautés Européennes'' (CAACE), ECSA promotes the interests of 19 member associations of the EU and Norway. As a trade association, ECSA strives for a regulatory environment that fosters the international competitiveness of European shipping. ECSA works through a permanent secretariat in Brussels, a Board of Directors and a number of specialised committees and working groups. ECSA’s current President is Philippos Philis, its Vice-President is Karin Orsel. The organisation is recognised by the European Institutions as the representative body of the European shipping sector, and is registered in the European Commission’s Transparency Register for Interest Representatives since 23 June 2008. The International Chamber of Shipping is one of the world's principal shipping organisations, representing around 80% of the world's merchant tonnage through membership by national shipowners' associations. International Maritime Organization
The International Maritime Organization (IMO, French: ''Organisation maritime internationale'') is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is an international maritime treaty that sets minimum safety standards in the construction, equipment and operation of merchant ships. The International Maritime Organization convention requires signatory flag states to ensure that ships flagged by them comply with at least these standards.
