Europe After The Rain
"Europe After The Rain" is a song by John Foxx, released as a single in August 1981, and included on '' The Garden'' album released later the same year. The song signalled a departure from Foxx's previous solo work which had focused on a sparse electronic sound whereas ''Europe After The Rain'' features a warmer sound, using acoustic and electric guitars, acoustic piano and live drums to produce the music. The bass and string sounds were however produced by a synthesiser. Foxx has several times stated that this change in musical direction was caused by a visit to Italy after the Metamatic period, where he worked with director Michaelangelo Antonioni for the soundtrack of his film ''Identification of a Woman''. Although the single only reached no. 40 in the UK Singles Chart, Foxx performed the song on UK music show ''Top of the Pops'' where Foxx's new more romantic style was presented in the clothes and setting to accompany the performance in stark contrast to that of "Underpass" ... John Foxx
John Foxx (born Dennis Leigh; 26 September 1948) is an English singer, musician, artist, photographer, graphic designer, writer, teacher and lecturer. He was the original lead singer of the new wave band Ultravox, before leaving to embark on a solo career in 1980 with the album ''Metamatic''. Primarily associated with electronic synthesizer music, he has also pursued a parallel career in graphic design and education. Andy Kellman of AllMusic described Foxx as an influential cult figure whose "detached, jolting vocal style inspired mainstream and underground artists across the decades." The Luminaire
The Luminaire was a live music venue on Kilburn, London, Kilburn High Road in north west London, United Kingdom, UK. It opened on 1 March 2005 in what was a nightclub called Late, above McGovern's Pub and The Kilburn Bar. Its last public show was 9 March 2011. Student apartments now occupy the space. It was co-founded by John Donnelly, a publican and property developer from Ireland, and Andy Inglis, a Scot and artist manager. The venue name was inspired by a bar called Lit, in the Lower East Side, New York City. It was voted as Time Out (company), Time Out Magazine's London Venue of The Year in 2006 and as Music Week's UK Venue of The Year in 2007, primarily because of its positive attitude to both artist and audience. In a newsletter in November 2010, The Luminaire announced their closure saying that "It's been a labour of love for a while now, and at this point it makes no sense for us to continue." Louis Gordon
Louis Gordon (born 1965) is an English musician notable for his collaboration with John Foxx. He has worked with Foxx on a number of albums since 1995. His solo work has also been released on the Toffeetones record label. Biography John Foxx had met Louis Gordon after watching one of his concerts. The concert was at Berrington Hall, near Shrewsbury and was in aid of Louis' birthday (in January 1995). Gordon was said to be "blown away" by their meeting. Modern Art - the Best of John Foxx is the title of an 18-track compilation album by British recording artist John Foxx, issued in 2001. Its issue coincided with the publication of a new album with Louis Gordon "The Pleasures of Electricity" and the re-issue of Foxx's first four solo albums on CD, Metamatic, The Garden, The Golden Section and In Mysterious Ways, all published by Edsel Records. Unlike the previous compilation, Assembly, "Modern Art" is a chronological and fairly straightforward compendium of Foxx's 1980s singles (with the exception of "20th Century" which was a B side) plus a selection of tracks covering musical output since returning to the music scene in 1997. Although the content of the album features output from all of Foxx's musical output to date, including the Cathedral Oceans ambient project, the cover art uses photographs of Foxx from his relatively short Metamatic era. Max Ernst
Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe. He had no formal artistic training, but his experimental attitude toward the making of art resulted in his invention of frottage (surrealist technique), frottage—a technique that uses pencil rubbings of textured objects and relief surfaces to create images—and Grattage (art), grattage, an analogous technique in which paint is scraped across canvas to reveal the imprints of the objects placed beneath. Ernst is noted for his unconventional drawing methods as well as for creating novels and pamphlets using the method of collages. ''Assembly'' is the title of an 18-track compilation album by British recording artist John Foxx, issued in 1992. It contains tracks from the artist's first four albums – ''Metamatic'', '' The Garden'', ''The Golden Section'' and ''In Mysterious Ways'' as well as tracks which had not been previously issued in an album format. The A-side and B-side are the two sides of phonograph records and cassettes; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay and hopefully become a hit record. Eddie and Sunshine were an electronic synthpop cabaret duo of the early eighties, comprising Eddie Maelov (real name Eddie Francis) and Sunshine Patteson (now working as Sunshine Gray), both previously founder members of the punk rock band Gloria Mundi. They released a number of singles and one album, ''Perfect Strangers'', on Human Records and Survival Records (a label the duo founded, with the members of Drinking Electricity) and toured in Britain and Europe.
