Ethel Marie Burton Palmer (October 23, 1897 - May 1985) was an American comedic film actress. Biography Burton was born in New York City and began working in films in 1915. She worked for Vitagraph, World Comedy Stars Film Company and Vim Comedy Company. She often appeared as a supporting actress in films with Billy West and Oliver Hardy. She co-starred in the first four Billy West comedies, during which time she met director Arvid E. Gillstrom. They became a couple and were married in 1917. Burton and Gillstrom divorced in 1931 and Burton continued acting under the name Ethel Gillstrom. ''The Hero'' is a 1917 American silent one-reeler comedy film starring Billy West and featuring Oliver Hardy (as Babe Hardy). The film is viewable free of charge on YouTube. Plot A Chaplinesque figure opens a safe and takes out tramp clothes, hat and cane. The tramp stands at a reception desk and steals the free snacks before going into the adjacent dance hall, which is crowded with dancers. He goes outside and a girl laughs at his appearance. Meanwhile in a rich suburb, a fat man (Hardy) meets a girl who is happy to see him. He goes to sit with her mother on the porch but misses the swinging seat. The mother lets him take her daughter out. In a park the tramp approaches a man (Count Bon Ami) pestering a girl sitting on a bench. He mocks the man. They have a duel using canes instead of swords. Cupid's Rival
''Cupid's Rival'' is a 1917 American silent comedy film featuring Oliver Hardy. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Billy works as the janitor of a studio apartment, and has been ordered by Hyfligher, a rich artist, to bring his breakfast to him. Residing in an adjacent studio is Daub, a poor artist, who has painted a picture of Dough for the landlord in lieu of rent. Doub sees his sweetheart Ethel entering the studio of Hyfligher. He is enraged, and bursts into the room to find Ethel stroking the head of the rich artist. Daub seizes a painting of Ethel and smashes Hyfligher on the head with it.
